For some reason 99% of gun store employee's are completely inept at providing any type of customer service. In the current market I guess they really dont need to have any customer service. Sorta like drug dealers, the product sells it self.

Wow, nothing like a shop making you feel like a criminal before you walk in.I've been there three times and not had a bad experience yet. Haven't been in about a year (don't live in the area). Last time I was in there was a sign outside that said to buzz and wait, not to enter as customers leave, and to remove hats and sunglasses before entering.sigpic10mm collectorComment

Reminds me of most Fresno area shops.
Herb's will ignore, tease or belittle you whilst charging 20% more than anyone in town.
But, they sell every gun they get.
With shops like these you either gotta get 'in' with the employees, or get out.
Herbs has come through for me, but because of personal connection."One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation.""Can any of you seriously say the Bill of Rights could get through Congress today? It wouldn't even get out of committee."Comment

So was this sign there when the OP stopped by? Did he possibly miss it? If so instead of politely (or even unpolitely) explaining to him the error he just made, they figured it was better for business to rudely and pointedly ignore him until they lost at least 2 potential customers.I've been there three times and not had a bad experience yet. Sounds like they practice the A**Clown school of business in that shop.
Personally I wouldn't even shop in that store since they obviously feel (who better to know) they are in such a dangerous part of town that they require such stringent security measures for their employees safety. Given that need for security, a customer has an obvious chance of getting robbed as they exit the shop.Comment

I would be more worried about some tree hugger then I would be about a robber in that neighborhood.sigpic10mm collectorComment

I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt as to the reason they felt compelled to put such entry methods in place.
Since you say their hyper-security is not needed due to possible crime, then it's just in place because of their over inflated egos. When the OP entered the shop without following their preferred method it violated their sense of bring in control and thus "better " then the lowly customers it seems.
So my a**clown comment still stands.Comment

This.. I go to Markley's and they don't seem to have a problem with shades, hats, long sleve shirts, Tats, hell they leave the front doors wide open.
Shockingly the day i went to dros a gun this guy was covered in tats up to his neck and was taken care of like everyone else.Comment

I made the point of the cage buzz in only because it added to my experience of being unwelcomed, the only employee that was aware I was not buzzed in was the rude receptionist / guard at the front. The rest of the shop had no idea I was not officially "buzzed" in, they were rude all on their own with no pre conceived notions that they should or should not shun me. It is just really sad to go back to my hometown and experience attitudes I would expect from anti gunners in a gun shop. I have great experiences in the central valley at places like Alquist Arms in Turlock A+ and Barnwood Arms in Ripon A+SI VIS PACEM, PARA BELLUMComment

I also like the fact that they leave all the long guns out where people can fondle them at will.This.. I go to Markley's and they don't seem to have a problem with shades, hats, long sleve shirts, Tats, hell they leave the front doors wide open.

I bought a gun there and was in and out in less than 15 minutes. Pickup same way. Bass Pro 2 hours to buy and 2 hours to pick up.Comment

I was just going to mention Alquist arms Richard and bobby know me by name it's a real good place. That must be like going to a third world country having to be buzzed into a shop with bad attitude employees.I made the point of the cage buzz in only because it added to my experience of being unwelcomed, the only employee that was aware I was not buzzed in was the rude receptionist / guard at the front. I used to be in Rangemaster at least once or twice a week for the better part of two years. This was several years ago, but I can't imagine John accepting poor customer service from his employees. I hope your experience is out of the ordinary for them because that used to be one of the best gun stores I've ever been in.I'm a big old, bourbon-soaked cigar-huffing ***, as God in his infinite wisdom meant me to be. - Charlie Sheen.Comment

When Robert owned rangemaster (both locations) I liked going there. He was so helpful and all of his staff .
Since he sold both locations
I've been in there a few times and each time it was what you described poor customer service . I go to Lock N Load in Lompoc . Not a big selection and not a lot of room but awesome customer service and Jeff can get you just about whatever you need.Comment

I agree with this. If you've got a beef, talk to John, or his wife Marcie.I used to be in Rangemaster at least once or twice a week for the better part of two years. They are the owners, very nice, and very helpful.
I think people would rather be victims and complain, than to actually speak up and do something about this.
As far as the entry procedure, don't sweat the small stuff
They make you take your hat and glasses off to go into SESLOC for crying out loud.
I've been ignored at Four Seasons before, along with Home Depot, Best Buy, and the Post Office
I still go in there if I want something they have
And if it bothered me enough, I'd speak up there, not here
As far as I'm concerned, sometimes it's just as aggravating to be asked over and over again, "can I help you?" when I'm just lookingComment

I always take my sunglasses off when I walk into a building but I'm not taking my hat off. SESLOC is a bank for those that were wondering. I think that it's stupid that you have to be buzzed in or out of a store. Makes me feel like a criminal and it really isn't needed in a hippy town such as San Luis Obispo. I agree that I would rather ask for help if I need it.I agree with this. If you've got a beef, talk to John, or his wife Marcie.
