You are lucky to have known your Great Grand father, most have not, and many will never get to do this. All I can tell you about your Great Grand pa, is he was a very nice guy, and easy to talk to. I hope your reunion is great this year.

And for the farm, it's the fishing, and your Great Grand Father, I remember the most. These days most of the contact with the farm is with the feed store, and so life is like that sometimes, but memories are forever.

Well thank you, and even if you don't remember much atleast you had some good memories while down there. I didn't expect to many people on this board to be from the Redding area, let alone fish in the same family fishing hole as me. Meeting you on here was nice, and I'm glad you have fond memories of my Great Grand father.

I am surprised to hear that there aren't alot of shooting areas up there. I thought there was much more open land up there. I heard you can wake up, scratch your nuts, drink your coffee and shoot a deer from a cabin window. Well, that's what my friend told me in 1999.

bigchinner : In 1999 there was a lot more open areas than today. you see many from So cal came here to live, and area has grown a lot since. That said, we still have much in the way of Mountains, all the way around, and even if you have to travel farther these days, there's still many hunting opportunities.

Now there's some open area, but still a fair amount of private property in the lower elevations.

There are tons of places you can do just that. I used to live in Ono (west of Redding about 20 minutes); I still own the house there. We could shoot from the house in all directions, except toward the road. Deer, quail, and turkeys were commonly on our lawn. We've whacked a few turkeys there. My brother-in-law wanted to plant roses (red roses at 20 yards, white roses at 30 yards, yellow roses at 40, etc. etc.) for a little archery hunting while sitting in the yard. I miss living there.

Aw Ono, I remember it well. I had access to to rainbow lake road at the end at sunny hills I think it was. We were able to hunt 3000 acres below, 3300 acres on, and another 300 plus access of land locked BLM on back side. i got my 1st deer there 265 to 280 lbs 4 point w/double eye guards, muley cross. I can remember not having enough shot shell to quail hunt, and I brought 2 boxes thinking I'd have enough, Wrong !. Shot those up the first 40 min. I'll tell you, but you probably already know, I've seen more animals in one day, than in 10 years of national forest. And I'd go 1-2 times per week during deer, we won't even talk about the other types of hunting. But sadly those days are gone, and the property owners will no longer let you in, And my friend who got me in, has since left the area. Those were some sweet days

If you could Lat/Long it on GoogleEarth, I'd like to check it out. Iron Mtn is killing me, just an accident waiting to happen.

1st off it's not Iron mt, it's Iron mt, road. about 400 yards up the road from Keswick dam boat access. Directions are head towards whiskey town dam turn right on Iron Mt road, it's about 2 1/2 mile past Buenaventura bl. just follow it out, you'll pass Keswick Dam, keep going, after passing the boat launch turn, it comes up on LEFT,, right on the road multiple turnouts. YOUR HERE !
