My boss is a very liberal, Card carrying Obama voting Democrat. For the most part, I'm fine with this. She is a good boss and treats all of us really well, and work feels like an extended family of sorts. Anyway, from everything I've heard her say, she isn't pro gun, and seemed to lean the other way.
Last month a (relatively new, < 3mos) employee had a falling out with her, due to some attitude and insubordination issues, and was subsequently fired. The next day (and I didn't hear about it till 2 days afterward) some of the employees "friends" made some very threatening phone calls full to the brim with profanities and insults. Some of the things mentioned were(paraphrased, with LOTS of profanity) 'destroy your little shop' 'make you wish you hadn't been born', 'you're gonna hurt so bad' etc. I don't remember if the word "kill" or "burn" were explicitly used, but I seem to remember getting those impressions.
Anyway, she felt threatened enough to file a police report, and call a security meeting with all 7 of her employees, showed us where the "help" buttons were and went over safety protocols, exit plans, etc.
One of my coworkers moonlights as an armed guard, and I have a handgun and am in the process of getting my permit, and, after my boss made mention of the fact that she almost bought a gun when she was younger, we both brought up the fact that we both own and shoot handguns. She said she would think about us having them at work, and contact her insurance.
The next week, she said that she had talked to her insurance and they said that there was a ton of liability involved and she thought it would be a better idea if I didn't bring it in to work.
WELL, yesterday as we were leaving work, she asked me "Alex, How good of a shot are you?"
not sure what she was talking about, I said "you mean with a gun?" (because there's basketball, blowguns, slingshots, archery, etc.)
She affirmed that that was what she meant, and I said "Well, I can put every shot on the target at 10 yards... I'm not professional or anything, why do you ask?"
She went on to explain that a Sacramento cellphone store had had an attempted robbery, and the owner shot the robber, and she wanted to know if I could hit someone in the lobby from my room at the end of the hall. (its almost exactly 10 yards by my estimate)
Anyway, I was intrigued that she, being who she is, would reconsider her position on me and my co-worker bringing our guns to work. Maybe there's a little hope in the world after all.
