I have steel swingers that I use some times. Cans are great too. For groups I use a cardboard box with a paper target taped to the side. But what ever you shoot at pack it in/pact it out. No glass, it is too hard to pick up the pieces.

          1. I use some rope with 'clay pigeon hangers.' The clay disappears with the next rain. Picked up the hangers at a gun show. Empty soda cans hanging from rope can do the same but then there is trash to pick up.

Anything you can hang between two polls hammered into the ground is easy and will break down quickly. (tire rims, hanging cresent wrenches)

          2. Plastic army men from the dollar store is silly but kind of fun if you want to build trenches, place soldiers, and sit back with a 10/22. Spent shotgun hulls is a good substitute. Kids dig that. Heck, I've found that entertaining.

          3. Political yard signs, or realtor signs are perfect for cardboard and targets too. Also fairly easy to come by this time of year. Paper plates stapled to cardboard when attached works as well.

          4. boxoftruth.com has a takedown pvc platform you can build for a wood frame if you desire something like a range.

          5. Some tent stakes for making 2x2 boxes on the ground for practicng movement while pistol shooting. You can use a spray can for the boxes as well. Set the boxes up 10-15 ft apart. Person does a figure eight around the boxes walking with a holstered weapon. Idea is a person enters the box, draws, etc to take the shot. Another person tells the shooter which (of several) targets to aim at. Not perfect but better than just standing and blazing.

A lot of the above is good. Especially, if you're taking a pick-up as you can put the gear in back, and trash can be easily placed hauled out. Try and leave the area better then when you found it.

I used to use One Gallon Paint cans, empty and cleaned out of course. Allways wanted to fill one with jello, never did it though.

What ever you bring clean up when your done. We always take out stuff that is going to be easy to bring home. Bowling pins are great and will last you a few trips at least. Usaually there is enough garbage some jack***** has left out there to shoot at as well. We end up trying to take some of thier crap home for the trash can. Have Fun!!!!

I have an old one gallon jug of milk in my fridge that needs to go. I think I'll shoot it instead of just throwing it out (AKA: I'll shoot anything disposable/dispensable ).

Target of choice - ground squirrels. Next option is used prints off the plotter from work and a blu marker to make lines and other shapes.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

Get some styrofoam cups and freeze some colored water with a string through them (like a candle) and hang the frozen targets from a frame of PVC or 2x4s. Then nothing to clean up after blowing them up..but you gotta shoot fast.

Where's the closest BLM (what is BLM anyway?) property to the East Bay Area?

I shoot paper, steel plates, and potatoes. Ten pound sack of potatoes is cheap, gets you a bunch of varmint sized reactive targets and in some cases is a self propagating crop of new targets.
