What a bunch of BS. How does a gun get scratched by racking the slide or pulling the trigger? If the finish is that delicate, have the customers remove any rings, or put on cloth gloves. If it's a wear issue, lube it really well with a thick grease & if possible remove the firing pin. A display gun should be expected to lose a bit of value, that's just the cost of doing business.

Racking the slide causes scratches on the barrel hood.
Dry fire/trigger pull will cause scrapes on the side of the aluminum trigger and the hammer of course will have wear from contact.

Sure, all superficial wear, but done enough, the gun will not look pristine.

That gives room for people to say, you gotta discount the price, it looks used.

So do all the people including the OP who say it's no big deal, does that mean you all take the display model when you slap down your 2-3000 bucks?

Or are you one of those that insists in getting an Unmolested gun from the dealers stock or warehouse?

The feel of the Baer slide is definitely different than a Wilson, Ed Brown or Nighthawk slide, and the same applies to the triggers, so I'd expect to rack the slide and test the triggers on all of them to get a feel for the action. To expect a customer to simply pick one and pay is nothing short of nonsense.

Turners had no problem allowing me to fondle a $2,500 Baer recently, and he knew I had no interest in purchasing it. Racked the slide, pulled the trigger, and handed it right back to him. No harm, no foul.

If we were talking about a Wilson Supergrade, I'd expect to be tossed from the store for even suggesting that it come out of the case.

I wouldn't buy a gun without actually getting a feel for it. It's not like you can go to any range and rent a les Baer, Wilson combat, nighthawk or Ed brown. So all you got left is 10 second of holding a gun and feeling it out before you drop $2,000 + on a 1911. Also it's not everyday a guy with no gun handling experience walks in and asks for a lea Baer or nighthawk. If a guy walks in a specifically asks or that gun chances are he knows a thing or two about handling guns with care.

Go to turners reseda, they have a les Baer and Ed brown in stock and they will let you feel it out.

'OP I feel for you but I can sort of understand why a retail place would act so snobby and distrusting of their customers. A friend of mine, like most guys, is really into cars. But, he satisfies his love for cars in the most ridiculous of ways: he tests drives every single car the dealership will let him, tying up salespeople by prodding them with endless questions, but NEVER intends on buying the car in question. This guy spends his free time going to dealerships and trying to test drive cars. After a while, none of the sales people and dealerships wanted anything to do with him, and all he could do was rant and rave about how customer service has gone down the tubes.

Again I understand your frustration, but there IS another side to it. Lookey-loo's and tire kickers are the bane of the retail industry...

Even though gun is just a tool, but if I am spending $2000-3000 on a 1911, I wouldn't want one that had the slide racked or dry fired hundreds of times.

Exactly, so if a small shop , not a chain like Turners, wont let people finger bang the gun so it does not get racked or dry fired excessively is it really unreasonable?

                    +1

A lot of Turners employees actually use a mint gun from their warehouse to close the deal. Heard it dozens of time from different Turners location.

^ and that's all I am saying. The Salesman was not convinced RoadKing was buying so he would not let me play with it first...that's the ONLY explanation for why he/she wouldn't remove the zip tie.

Think about it... you walk into a store slap down your CC/HSC/DL and say, I'm going to buy one of these right now...do you think the salesman is going to say No to a dry fire? No he/she is not... Now what about tom dick or harry TYPES who walk in DAILY ask to play with every freaking firearm then walk out...sure got no problem with them playing with the regular firearms...but I am sure there are rules governing how the top shelf guns are handed over...

RoadKing, this was not their fault...or at least you share 50% of the fault for not properly identifying yourself as a true buyer. The salesman did his job by showing you the firearm AND protecting the stores merchandise.

Next time put on the other guys shoes and don't expect to be treated like a king while looking like a surf. (I am not saying you wore ratty clothes either. Its an expression of how you presented yourself through your actions) I expect 100 people a week ask to play with those custom handguns.

I take the gun I got to try out function on. That's the point! Unless you plan on never firing the gun ( cause we all buy guns to just throw in our safe and never use right ) one trip to the range is going to put more wear on the pistol than racking the slide a couple times.

but he is not a lookie loo he is a buyer
Said we needed to look at some high end 1911's. Gun World carries Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, Les Bear, Ed Brown... and the wife wants a NICE 1911. Went into the back, where there were only a couple Ed Browns in that category. No problem, the wife hasn't held one of those before and it was a good chance to compare trigger pulls and slide action to the nighthawks, springfields, kimbers and les bears we looked at the day before.
first line says you are not a buyer .... get over it you are just the typical lookieloo and most liklky not buy anyway and complain about the shop online while looking for the best price online and have it shipped to a different brick and mortar ....

"dealers stock or warehouse"?? I want to shop where you're shopping if there is that kind of inventory as I've never been to a LGS where the handgun I'm touching isn't the gun I'd be buying or they are x number of item deep in stock and this is the display only. Best Buy for sure, but a LGS?

Lots of shops have one in the case an then 2, 3, or 4+ in the back of that model. They sell the one in the case most times and after that they bring out the next one. But if a buyer asks about back stock or starts pointing out handling wear on the one in the case they will pull an un-handled one from the back to close the deal.

If they had inventory of 5 units of the same particular model of 1911 for example do you think they are going to put all 5 in the case at once?
