Just ask for a couple of boxes of ammo included with the range time, and go fix the date. Both parties should have double checked if not triple checked. Useless to blame. What's done is done. Solve the problem and move on.

I've learnt to never trust anyone, no matter how well you know a person, because mistakes are bound to happen. Just like if someone handed you a firearm, your first lesson was to quickly check and double check if the firearm is loaded or not right?

If the whole game is about DOJ anal nonsense

Who's to say that at sometime in the future, that the DOJ says

"Since this is dated incorrectly, the PPT is invalid"

So now you don't really own the gun, and have to start over.

So, I would want to make sure that I am covering myself

You are just hoping or assuming that you are covered

      Good luck with that
I am more than sure you as the customer would not face any legal charges from writing in the wrong date on the 4473 form and the FFL accepting said form as valid and correct.

It is up to the FFL to ensure all laws are followed and the DROS and Forms are filled out correctly because the DOJ will come down on them, not you. Why do you think Big 5 makes you wait 11 days to pick up your firearm instead of 10? Because if they release the gun to you early, they are in the crapper and not you. I am sure a FFL will back that up.

At the end of the day every man should be responsible for what they sign but sometimes people make mistakes. FFL's on the other hand, when they make said mistake they have the ability to go out of business. It is imperative that they always double check the information to cover their business and their livelihood and not rely on the customer to always be 100% right. To continue to claim that the ultimate responsibility lies on the customer, who may or may not know the importance of the DROS process needing to be 100% accurate, and not the responsibility hanging on the FFL just puzzles me.

For old folks, an 8 looks like a six.

Just don't try it with the IRS, and don't ask me how I know about that.

Sorry, but the buyer will face zero repercussions from putting the incorrect date. None. They cannot invalidate your PPT or demand the firearm back.

That is why stating it is the buyer's responsibility makes no sense and is not the reality of the situation. The reality of the situation is the FFL is going to get audited and the ATF is going to write them up for having an inconsistent form. The buyer will face zero consequences for this. It is all on the FFL. The government could try and make the case that the buyer filled out the form with the wrong date as a lie and prosecute them for perjury I suppose, but good luck with that case on an incorrect date.

So a smart FFL will first of all make sure it gets fixed as the customer is signing it. If they miss it, they will do what it takes to get the customer to come back in and fix it or get the customer to fix it without them coming in. Most smart FFLs really know how they would have fixed this and it wouldn't have involved the customer at all.

I however like the OPs idea of going back and taking care of it since they offered free range time. I find just a little bit of grease will help get the wheel to move. When people are nice and accommodating, they tend to get things done. I am glad the shop is willing to work with you, even if a little bit to try and get the situation resolved.

Isn't there a line on the form (near your signature line) saying all the information correct under penalty of law?

I thought it read something about being correct to the best of my knowledge? I mean at the time with the information I was given, I believed the date was correct.

But on the 0.000001% chance the men in black are gonna to crawl up inside me and take my guns away, I will travel across the deadly Ortegas and go fix the paperwork.

Hopefully the offer of free range time is still valid next week when I wander on over there.

I do wonder why the shop couldn't "fix" something like a date - 6 and 8 seem close enough to fix - without me driving all the way over there. I'm guessing they are printing up all fresh and new paperwork and I'll be dating, signing, crossing Ts and dotting Is all over again.

Fixing a signature would be way out of line, but a number??

Anyway, it shall be fixed. IMHO the FFLs do a lot of BS for 10 measly bucks so I'll make the drive (on my schedule).

Your address is on the form. If the FFL really cared, they know where to find you. You could ask them come to you. Why should you have to be the one to drive? Why should you be inconvenienced? Why is your time worth less than theirs?

On the other hand... It's not like there's an FFL on every corner. It would suck to burn this bridge now and then when you want to transfer another gun they would remember you being a ****. Uh-oh.

I like 10%'s suggestion of using the Mail.

This is not my regular FFL. I only used them because the seller choose them. I had never been there before and really hadn't planned on going again. It's an hour drive on a crappy road that is closed several times a week due to moron drivers.

Agreed. Ive missed a block on 4473's before. At the end of the day it was a failure of attention to detail on both FFL and my part. However Ill go out of my way for a friendly FFL just trying to avoid being reamed by DOJ for a date error. Free range time offer seems fair enough.

I think you might have skimmed the thread too quickly. The date error was made on the PICK UP. I took the gun home on the 6th but wrote the 8th next to my name when I signed for the final time.

The shop didn't notice this until the 12th, and then called me.

There is no justification for the public servant police to be more heavily armed than the law-abiding public they serve...Unless...the government's intention is to be more powerful than the people.
