Yep, the shop should not have released the firearm without all paperwork in order. It's not the buyer's fault that the shop made a mistake (by not catching the buyer's mistake) and now is asking him to cover their azz.

Well then, we will continue to agree to disagree.

I believe a notorized statement of the error would fix his paperwork and often credit Unions will notorize for free. Help the guy as much as you can.

I have learned to always check the date myself and not trust anyone else. It will only take seconds to look at that fancy iPhone I carry.

I would hope the shop trains their employees to check paperwork as well. Then again, I don't think she would have caught the wrong date because she gave it to me. I can only assume it was caught when another set of eyes looked at it.

I do feel bad about it because I know they only make 10 bucks off the deal. And it seems like a lot of BS for only ten bucks.

I agree with those who say it was their bust for not making sure the paperwork was correct and I also I agree I screwed up by writing in wrong info.

I guess I might be heading over the Ortegas next week. Maybe I can find some ammo or a gun for sale over there cheap.

I don't believe the shop needs to pay you for it. Just fix it with you and say sorry.

I hope you don't open up a business with the attitude of, 'oh thats the customers responsibility, I don't need to double check that even though its my butt if this gets screwed up.' That is bad business practice to just trust the customer to put all the correct info without double checking it, when only the shop is at risk of punishment.

                My two cents,
Pay it forward, go take care of this mistake.
Some range time and a box of Ammo possibly - will help them remember to check everything twice.
Since you are retired and buying guns you've got income, your not thankfully in the group of folks my girlfriend serves that doesn't have bus fare to get to the doctor, nor need a special van to help you go anywhere, take a nice drive, fix a problem with a smile and enjoy our 2A rights by using the range and enjoy life.

I wonder if there is any place safe to park half way on the Ortega Highway?

Most likely I'll go there to shoot next week instead of my usual spot in Oceanside.

They did offer some free range time, which really doesn't cost them anything, unless the place is packed and I would be taking a lane from a paying customer.

                          You're missing my point

I don't have an attitude, I am taking responsibility

A lawyer will always say, "read this over, and make sure everything is correct"

I was at the Sheriff's office last week renewing my LTC

It was all filled out by the Sheriff's office

The guy says to me "read this over, make sure the name , address, DOB, dates, and serial numbers are correct before you sign it"

I am agreeing with your statement about bad business practices.

However, ultimate RESPONSIBILITY lies with the person signing the document.

There is plenty wrong with this post.

First, when I said this, "I don't have to double check, even though it's my butt if this gets screwed up?", I was referring to you saying the responsibility lands on the person and not the gun shop. The person who bought the gun is under no legal trouble what so ever for screwing up the date on a 4473, while the gunshop takes ALL of the risk of their business because THEY didnt double check.

You are saying that because it was the persons responsibility to ensure he provided the right information, that the gunshop now has no responsibility to double check that information even though they are the only ones at risk. You advocate personal responsibility for the customer but not the gunshop because he was the one who had to sign the paperwork and the FFL should just blindly trust he did the form correctly?

Lastly, the rest of your post was just a ramble about taking responsibility for signing legal documents, lawyers etc. I am only making an argument regarding gunshops and the 4473 were the customer is at no risk of legal issues because he marked a wrong date. Only the gunshop was at risk here, and you are giving them a free pass at their responsibility to ensure they covered themselves.

As you said, good luck getting through life like that.

Do you know for a fact that you would be under no legal risk, or are you just hoping or assuming that?

I'm not giving anyone a free pass, including myself.

If the whole game is about DOJ anal nonsense

Who's to say that at sometime in the future, that the DOJ says

"Since this is dated incorrectly, the PPT is invalid"

So now you don't really own the gun, and have to start over.

So, I would want to make sure that I am covering myself

You are just hoping or assuming that you are covered
