While the Federal ban started in 1994, one could still buy many types of AWs in Ca until 1-1-2000. Then, there was a +/-4 1/2 year dry period where only FAB10s and Evan's rifles were being sold. After that, the OLL thing started. The first mag locks were nothing more than nylox nuts holding mag catches tight in place. The BB, and other mag locks which use tools to release mags, evolved about the time that OLLs were becoming a bit more noticable to the public.
For all you hates out there, I love my FAB10s and PARA-1. They are novelty guns that have a certain curiosity factor and are a constant reminder of what we've gone through in the last few years. They were the cutting edge in their day and helped get us whee we are today. Don't knock them. Besides, those of us with early FAB10s and a bit of forthought were able to register them as "50 BMG rifles". I still kick myself for only registering one FAB10.
