A bunch of my friends actually did send theirs out of state, so they didn't have to register them. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who just keep theirs locked up, burried, hidden, and never take them out, but I don't know any of them I remember the fear for many was that once they were registered the Feds were just collecting who owned them for future confiscation. I'm not saying that couldn't still happen.

Yep, It'll happen again if Yee gets his way and make many normally law abiding citizens felons.

I didn't register my MAK-90 and kept it in Arizona, I have more but never talk about them and never will. Anyway, I considered registering certain weapons including my MAK-90, but part of the registration process is that you gave the DOJ permission to come into your home to check on your weapon. That was the deal-breaker. Never give up a Constitutional Right. I wonder if they can still come in if you got rid of the RAW?

I don't think you understand what was really happening.... Sen Yee's legislation would have required nothing more than a stroke of the pen of the AG up until a few years ago

A few years ago the BB was still on less sure footing, until the DOJ actually used fixed magazine arguments in their own prosecution arguments, and also acknowledged that BB do require tool use and are therefore fixed mag. I think it was only about a year ago that we had the DOJ letter to ad to our flow chart.

When I first moved to CA I sold my AR lowers because I was too unsure of the legal standing, what a different world we are in now, unless the new bill adds any traction. I trust those in the know that it will all be ok in the end.

If you wanted a semi-auto .223 rifle: Obviously, there were the Keltec, the Mini-14, and the Vq evolution. Can't remember whether the Browning BAR was available in .223 (I think the smallest round you can get it chambered in was something around .240), but it clearly doesn't satisfy the desire for an evil black rifle. Remember, the idea of the OLL movement was to make assault rifles (in the mold of the AR- and AK series) available in California again, and there only the Keltec and the Mini-14 get close.

Once we had OLLs, you could either build them featureless, using the following tricks to take care of the pistol grip problem:
SRB (Spring Retaining Bracket). Allows you to build an AR lower without using the pistol grip, yet holds the little spring in place.
Followed by the Monsterman grip.
Followed by the U15 grip (which attaches the rifle stock to the pistol grip attachment point, thereby making the pistol grip unnecessary).

Or you could build them as fixed-mag (non-detachable) mag rifles. Those were for the most part top loaders: you had to separate upper and lower receiver to load them. If the gun is well adjusted, and you use rapid-pull pins, this is actually very easy (just hinge it open). Here is how to build them:
Various magazines epoxied and/or riveted in place.
The Bushmater Carbon-15
A variety of mag lock kits, with the Prince being the most typical.
A variety of set screws to hold the mag lock in place (typically a #2 or #4 setscrew coming from the top of the receiver).

The third option is a dedicated rimfire (.22LR) version of the rifle.

The bullet button came pretty late; at the time it arrived on the scene, there were already 50,000 or 100,000 off-list ARs and AKs in the state. Look back at the old threads where bwiese used to regular estimate the number of OLLs that have entered the state.

The FAL has a lever and spring to retain the mag. If you did a little work on the lever and removed the spring it would flop around freely and not retain the mag. The hole in the lever which retained the spring could be drilled through and threaded. by using an set screw instead of the spring the mag could not be removed without the use of a tool, an Allen wrench.

Still, you were limited to 10 round mags. Then Tapco manufactured a forged aluminum top cover. Built into the top cover was a clip guide for stripper clips. Now you could leave the mag in place and use stripper clips to load it.

Finally BBs' for FALs were made.

I just feel like it's wrong to let them do that. Why should they get a free pass on your rights. If it wasn't for that, I might of registered it.

Remington makes a pump rifle (Rem 7615) that takes .223 mags

DPMS makes a pump style AR:

And there have also been folks that made ARs without the Gas systems in place, usually through a side-charging type deal.
