I agree with this, I don't like staring at firearms being carried by officers. Discreetly look, but any sort of longer than necessary studying could be construed as strategizing how to separate the firearm from the officer - and I don't want any officer thinking that's what I'm trying to do, because I'm not.

In 2003, the LAPD adopted the .40S&W Glock 22 as their standard issue sidearm, it replaced the 9x19mm Beretta Model 92FS.
Previously issued/approved sidearms are still authorized.

I was at the range and was waiting to get a lane, and could not help but notice that there was a Glock box that indicated that it contained 15 round magazines. We struck up a conversation to pass the time waiting for a lane, turns out the person is a CDCR Corrections Officer, and in the box was a rarely fired Glock 22; he shoots Springfield XD personally, but for work he uses a Glock 35.

Must have been at least 5+ years ago because SFPD switched from Beretta 96's to Sig 229's around that time.

I stopped in my tracks and blurted out, "Is that an STI?
He replied with a grin - "Damn right it is."

I complemented his clearly excellent taste and he complemented me for knowing what an STI was, as they are neither common nor CA legal for non-LEOs. He also expressed his frustration with other members of the department who "don't get it".

When I used to carry the 92f as a duty weapon I really wanted to get one chromed out with the ivory grips containing the religious symbols ala Romeo and Juliet. Now that would have drawn some looks.

Yes Merc, they can be "modified" to qualify for the SSE exemption - by that logic, all guns are "legal in California". Thank you for intentionally missing the obvious statement.

Nitpicking aside:
They're not an especially well known brand to begin with, and being an off roster gun they are exceedingly rare in CA.

I had my wallet out and a cop saw my CCW. he asked if I carry I said of course. He asked, "Now?" I said yes. I was wearing a ticked in dress shirt and was not printing. I could tell he was trying to guess where my firearm was, and for the sake of his job he should be adept at spotting any tell tale sign. I guess I passed the "concealed" part of the class!
