I think if I were to try that stunt, I would also remove my license plate, put one of those dealer placards in there and then apply the rules of not getting caught that I posted above.

I'm a rider, and chat things up at the local motorcycle shops.

I know a old-timer who keeps a sawed-off shotgun (loaded) under his old bike. I would hate to see that gun go off....

Hmm, once my wife is out of school, I might just have to sling a rifle and ride out to the range (K31? Garand?). I won't be evading, though.

Have you guys checked out Eberlestock Backpacks? They do seem pricey for me, but if a motorcycle was my main source of transportation, I would definitely consider one.

Most of them look like they'd sit a bit too low. The muzzle of your rifle would be hitting the seat, pushing the pack upwards.

                  That's what I thought too.
I'm sure they are great for walking, but walking backpacks don't necessarily make good riding backpacks.

As noted by other Calgunners in another thread w/motorbikes, the last thing you want is a long gun strapped to your back and go down, it could break your spine with ease if landed upon. YMMV, but I'll never ride with one slung across my back - backpack or not.

Personally I vote for open carry, with all ammo and mags in a bag or backpack. But then again I am a sucker for a good mouthful of pavement. Just be aware of what roads you are taking and prepare for some crazy looks. Anyone have a good .50 cal full auto SMG I can borrow for a nice weekend ride?

I saw a lot of bikers when I was living in Tucson, AZ with holstered .45's on there handle bars. It was sweet, you could holster carry anywhere but in a bar. Shopping at the store or at the bank never got you a second look. Ahh, good times..good times! -g

Put one of the gun racks on your bike.

Just adapt any one of the Police weapon mounts to your bike.

                            Man that'd be so cool....
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

                              Traveling with Firearms in California

                              HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.
The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

                              SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES

Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 12025 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code 12276 or 12276.1 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code section 12026.1.

                              REGISTERED ASSAULT WEAPONS

California Penal Code section 12285(c)(7) requires that registered assault weapons may be transported only between specified locations and must be unloaded and in a locked container when transported.
The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.
Just too bad those LEO gun mounts don't fit the "a secure container which is fully enclosed" defintition for Reg AWs & pistols (IMHO). OR do they?

You could get away with OLLs, shotguns, and ordinary rifles in the open (IMHO).
