    GUNS ON MOTORCYCLES

Guns on motorcycles, since I ride a sport bike and I go to the range, was wondering.
If I want to go to the shooting range but taking the bike ((cause you know traffic)).

can I take the gun in a back pack to be legal or how it will be a better way.

Unloaded, locked in a secure case in a backpack should be fine. Ammo outside the locked case, of course.

For safety, and to avoid upsetting people who don't know better, you might want to leave the mags empty until you get to the range.

I always love it when a Calgunner (who will go un-named here unless he shows himself)
rolls up to my shop on his bike with a rifle muzzle sticking up out of his backpack.

Yep, I know my customers when I see them 50yds away.

Are you talking about a handgun or a rifle? It depends...

LOL that wasn't me but when I sold my FAL I rode 20 miles to the FFL on my Harley like that!!! LOL. Does anybody have any good way for transporting a rifle or two on a motorcycle without a sidecar?

I sometimes go to the range/matches on any one my street bikes. Pistols & Reg. AWs have to be locked up. I've gone to 3-gun matches on the street bike. With the pistol/shotgun/rifle and all the ammo and shooting gear packed on the bike, without any issues or attracting undo attention to myself.

Depending on what bike I'm taking. The pistol & AR lower may get locked up in the lockable side plastic side saddles of my BMW motorcycle, in a small case, or in a backpack.

Good thing that ARs & shotguns break down, to make them easier to transport. I'm only required to lock up the registered AR lower (w/ collapsible stock), it fits just fine in the BMW side saddle. Shotgun (w/ barrel removed) and AR upper (either won't fit in side saddles), usually are in rifle/shotgun zippered soft cases and bungee corded to the bike, or if there is room in the backpack. With the long guns broken down in halves and strapped across the back seat/ cargo rack, I can still split lanes in traffic.

For the other bikes (with limited storage space), I can just place them in a cheap plastic tool box (locked) that is wide enough to fit the AR upper & lower. Tool box is discrete, no one has a clue to how much 2A hardware you have on the bike.

If it's just a pistol I'm taking to a range or match, I don't have problems taking a bike. I've gone to many GSSF and steel matches on my bike for the last three years.

The only reason I took the bike to the 3-gun match, was that my truck was in the shop to have a new A/C compressor installed. At least, I now know I can safely and legally transport my 3-gun gear to the range if I have to. Just depends on how far I have to ride to get to the range/match.

The bike had it another advantage, as I could ride the bike to each stage.. as there weren't any parking issues to be concerned about. The bike was basically my gun kart. Match director was fine with me riding the bike to each stage.

I have had Police and CHP pass right by me all the time on the freeway packed with 2A gear, without a second look.

I've been temped to get the same shotgun mounts that the CHP use and mount the shotgun to the bike, ala open carry. I'm sure it'll attract some attention. Not sure if I want to head in that direction. But, it does more securely mount the shotgun to the bike. I also thought that those ATV plastic hunting rifle cases might be an option. But, they too aren't very discrete.

ar15barrels might have seen me at the 3-gun match, when i took the BMW bike. I got a lot of double takes and thumbs up from the rest of the shooters. Many saying that the have always wanted to take their bikes to the range/match.

ive had ideas for a hard case mounting system, if anyone local wants to come by and experiment.

Are there any laws saying you can't have an shotgun or non-aw rifle strapped to your back while riding? I understand they would have to be unloaded, but besides that isn't open-carry legal?

Locked case and unloaded is fine. You can have the ammo in the same case - it doesn't have to be outside or in a separate compartment.

I've transported my Romy on motorcycle. I used a backpack and one of those big cardboard tubes like you'd put something poster-size in. I covered the top of the tube with tape, so that wind won't blow down inside and turn it into a piston (there goes my concealment!). Tie the zippers in place for security (don't want to drop my rifle on the freeway!) and I'm good to go. Very comfy way to carry, even though the tube touches the back of my helmet from time to time. It wouldn't work with a longer rifle, though. It works best since the Romy is so short.

Next time I carry my Romy that way, I'll snap some pics.

Yes, it's legal to simply sling an unloaded, non-AW rifle or shotgun to your back and hop on your bike, but in some areas (Bay Area, LA, SD, etc.), you'll attract a lot of attention, and probably get to kiss the pavement for the privilege.
