I usually ask them to either buy their own ammo of a specific type (factory new, non steel case, etc...) or reimburse me if they want to shoot mine. When they see the cost of ammo at a regular store for themselves, they quickly understand why...

I always take more ammo than I plan to shoot. Meet nice people at the range now and then. Once I offered another shooter a few mags in my AR if he would let me squeeze off 1 round of his 50 cal. Deal of the day if you ask me. Ended up shooting 3 rounds down range.

The last trip a buddy went with me. He has his own guns but we shot mind mostly, so he picked up a great lunch after.

I usually ask them to purchase their own
amo, or I go and buy ammo with them.
Besides the price of the gun, most of the
expense associated with this hobby is
          with purchase of ammo.

Treat it like drugs, first time free and they'll be begging for more. 22lr always free here.

                lunch

My non gun owning friends usually offer to by lunch or will bring there own ammo.I reload so I don't sweat ammo to much but the offer to pick up lunch is usually good enough.

First time I took my sons collage room mates I spent 200.00 in ammo 10 bucks each to get them into the gun range x 5 and then I bought lunch. $300.00 day shooting hurts but two of them had never shot.... Priceless. Now they all have guns and ammo and we can shoot more often.
My worst day shooting is better than my best day at work.

A lot of good strategies here. I'd pay the first time, and depending on their intentions, pay for them until they buy their own. If I think they're abusing the privilege, a convenient ammo stop at Wally World on the way to the range would be in order.

Usually the first time a new shooter comes with me I'll cover the ammo. After that I get them to buy some. I won't make them pay for 44 mag since I reload it on the cheap compared to the 35 bucks a box at the store. They can buy some 22 and a few boxes of the more common stuff and I'll mix in some of mine.
I always tell them the second time they come that ammo is cheap compared to the thousands of dollars worth of firearms that you get to shoot it through.

If its .22 I usually don't charge Otherwise I always mention how cheap and plentiful our local Wal Mart has ammo and to pick up a few boxes if they wanted to shoot with me.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. My female friends, I don't charge them for ammo. They don't shoot enough to make a dent in my supply. They will go to the range mostly to hang out and kick it with a cool guy

First time shooters, I foot the ammo bill for the first couple of times. If they're really interested in the hobby, they end up buying their own.

I don't know how kids do it these days, but no matter what the activity is, if I invite somebody to something, I'm paying. Dinner, movie, event, etc. That's just proper etiquette.

If it's a group thing (i.e. let's all agree to go out to the movies together), we're paying our own way.

If you have an issue with paying for ammo, don't invite them or make it VERY clear they will need to bring ammo. Don't make this a mystery or assume they are going to pay for anything. Tell them, straight up so you don't have to face awkwardness when you're at the cash register.
