Get a Cyclic rate reducer...will reduce the noise and you don't have to grease it or anything like that...my AR has the recoil of a .22 rifle now...

Sure, it might not make a sound anymore but when your buffer seizes up to the rear while you are firing (seen it happen more than once) you are stuck with a paperweight.
OMG So I read of one person who had left the same lube in there
and it got full of dirt and sand and blocked the hole in the tube causing a short stroke. Also read hundreds of posts as well as an ar15 manual saying a small amount is good to go. /shrug

If it will put your mind at ease tho,my new tube of my usual grease got here in the mail. I removed the axle grease and lubed it with some of my fresh tube of gunslick grease instead. Liitle whiffs of stinky axle grease got annoying real fast.

I've ran a film of gunslick in there , the bolt rings and cam pin since I built it, and it's never even acted like it wanted to malfunction. Only when I ran out of GS did it start doing it, maybe that's why it bugged me so much. I had boxes and boxes of pretty quiet operation , then suddenly it was there. The lesson is Axle grease is NO substitute for Gunslick. Stuff is great.
      Thanks for the input everyone.

You just replace your existing buffer with our product, codenamed "TWANG DANG," and you will experience an 85dbA increase in twang sound pressure level (SPL). The sound is transmitted directly to your hearing aids or to your electronic muffs via bluetooth wireless connection. For customers who do not use electronic muffs or hearing aids, we have a bluetooth cassette tape boombox adapter so you can set your boombox on your bench so everyone else can hear the amplified twang too. In live fire tests of our prototypes, we found a marked improvement in the ability of the shooter to hear the twang. Using the boombox can be upsetting to nearby shooters who may confuse your amplified twang with the unamplified twang of their own weapons. For this reason we will not recommend the use of the boombox adapter at a public range. MSRP $149.99. Bluetooth Cassette tape adapter sold separately. Expected availability 4/1/12. NOT SOLD IN STORES.

        This is pure awesome...!!

I love the sound. It's like the smell of burnt powder or CLP. It means fun.

This is what I learned 30some years ago. The AK also has a distinctive sound when the bolt goes home.

I tried a bunch of lubes to get it to stop, nothing worked.
Then I cleaned the reciever extension and tried some axle grease.

              Silent,smooth operation. No twang .
In other words: "My gun was functioning prperly and everything was normal. I couldn't stand it so, I kept F'ing around until I made it so the gun is not preforming the way it is supposed to."

I sure hope you don't do your own brake jobs. If you do, I can only guess that you grind the warning pins out of your pads so you won't hear squeeky brakes.

Not exactly cool guy. I took MY weapon and made it that much better for me.
The sound bothered me, and wasn't needed. If you use that sound to tell you your mag is empty fine.
I go by count and the feel of the carrier not slamming forward.

You've never changed a stock, modded a trigger , changed out sights? Who are you to assume or imply I'm stupid for lubing my rifle per manual specs?
If you want to get technical, this sound was unusual for MY rifle.

Thanks again for everyone's input on the subject,it's appreciated.

When i bought my first (and only) ar15 it cracked me up the first time i heard this ridiculous noise from it. That being said I find it hard to take seriously a rifle that sounds like the springs on a Wiley Coyote cartoon. I keep it only because the lovers of these things continue to drive up the price of this POS to the point it does better than my 401K some yrs.

I did a build with a non collapsable m16a2 style buttstock and the twang was non-existant.
