The first safe I bought was this Honeywell safe from Walmart.

Last year I was able to purchase my father in laws safe for $400. It holds up to 30 long guns and has 3 shelves. It is made by the Visalia Safe company. When he bought it back in 97-98 I think he paid around $1200 for it so I got a hell of a deal and could not pass it up.

good safe. decent. but not anything i would be excited over. pretty pricey typically for new.

Craigslist is going to be your best bet. just make sure YOU will ab able to move it. that will save you a lot of money. it really isnt that difficult. you just have to move it like how the egyptians did. Slow and use leverage to your benefit.

Or keep an eye out for turners ads. every now and than they have their gunsafes on sale for fairly cheap. YOur never going to be able to find something that is going to be unbeatable against a criminal. You can only make it difficult enough that it is not worth their effort. Ive drilled a safe open in under 10 minutes, it is my job. My boss has done bank vaults. If you know what you are doing they can be beaten quickly with minimal damage. Average joe shmchmo smuck burglar. prob take longer. they arent going to know where to defeat the safe. they are going to be an ape and beat it and pry on it. If they have time to bring a grinder in your sol with any safe.

All the lowes and costco safes are worthless. they can be gotten into in under 5 min. I don't know what exact safe you are looking at but i can guarantee it's not a "safe".
Lowe's sells Liberty made safes I betting you not going to get into my Liberty safe very easily. As a matter of fact I,ll bet you a 1911 you can't.

Home Depot carries Sentry safes. They have a 10 gun-ish size for 350-400 bucks. They're a real safe with real bolts and a real combination and concealed hinges. They're not fire-safe and they're not going to stop someone that has a little time on their hands but they are a decent entry level safe. I use them extensively. I still have a few top shelf cannon and browning brand safes that are fire rated but those are a PITA to move around, are heavy as hell so you can't use them everywhere and they cost a bloody fortune.

Because you are not willing to shell out $1500 for a 30 gun safe to hold one shotgun and one rifle and one pistol?

And I'm sure as hell not willing to shell out $1500 for a 30 gun safe to hold two rifles and a pistol also. But one day I'll have something small and bolted to the concrete. I won't let the lack of a safe stop me. Gun locks, hard cases, cabinets, safe. You've got a budget SOMEWHERE for something.

that's awesome. Surely NOT a coincidence that the OD of the safe is 3.5 inches, the same dimension as a wall-stud 2x4.

That's because most of us started with the $100 Stack-On cabinet because we couldn't afford a real safe when we started collect... er... buying guns.

so, either calguns is a community of morons, or there's a reasonable method to the madness?

                        Which do you prefer?

Did you buy a house with a 16 car garage before or after you started collecting classic musclecars?

The people I know who collect cars own multiple properties, and buy another inexpensive property with a 2 car garage when the collection grows too large.

But I was more reminded of the joke "what's the difference between a classic musclecar collection and a pile of dead babies?"
