There was a recent Supreme Court case about children's first amendment rights, Morse v. Frederick.

Basically, the article states the majority decision was that "First Amendment rights of students in school are not as broad as those of adults in other settings".

And this is a conservative dominated Supreme Court. Can't blame the liberals for this one.

"Not as Broad" does not equal "No Rights." Yeah, the "BongHits4Jesus" case is discussed above - the court found that the sign promoted illegal activity (drug use.)

That's the friggin point here - drawing "A" gun (or a couple rectangles and some squares as the case may be) does not promote illegal activity. Guns are legal to own in all 50 states. Guns are legal to shoot in all 50 states. I am so sick of people equating gun possession with illegal activity. Suspended for drawing a picture of item that is legal to own? What am I missing?

A picture of a gun, by itself, is not illegal, nor is a knife, nor a rock - nor does it "promote illegal activity" by any reasonable interpretation I can think of.

It's simple get a good lawyer and with enough preasure from him, you try to get the school to issue a statement that it does not support any form of artistic expression. Then the kids can't draw anything anymore, and the band can't play, and no more art classes because we ( the school) don't support any type of artistic endevors. They will nver go for it so you keep the preasure on untill they do...then you move in on a first ammendment issue. Or you just keep riding them untill they remove the susspension from the boys record. You either support your students or you don't...How many parrentds will be able to apply this to thier kids, let me see all of them. This is a nazi scare tactic, and the people in Colorado are still a bit jumpy from Columbine. So play to the liberal and the conservative. "We the parrents want a stand on the school's view on artistic expression." kind of thing. That should get some panties bunched up on both sides. This is the kind of socialist trash should be given alot of attention. These people are using Columbine to justify their own socialist liberal elitist agenda. How dare these school officials make this kind of stretch over a picture. And to not allow the parents to have a copy is so within the realm of authoritarian attitude. This is the kind of stuff that can't be allowed to stand in a free society. For educators to take this stance on this issue helps me understand why we have shootings at schools. "Gunfree zones" are kill zones, and our kids and grandkids are in the middle of them. These "educators" are going to be the first ones that scratch their heads and deny responsibility if a shooting does occur. But they create this environment of hoplophobia give themselves a false sense of security so they can continue to bury their heads in the sand until someone comes up behind them and shoots them or one of our kids. My mother in law is a teacher. At her school, kids aren't allowed to play on the playground equipment anymore because some kid fell and got hurt. Get this, they aren't allowed to play in groups of more than one or two kids because they would be "gangs". They are given a couple red rubber balls and sent to the handball walls. No dodgeball because it is too violent. So you have a bunch of kids standing around the black top by themselves. Couple that with the joke called "no child left behind" and you have a bunch of uneducated emotionally F'd up kids growing up to become nutcases. I dunno who's at the helm of this ship but its sinking fast.

OK, none of you see what's really going on. It's not an airplane. It's not the space shuttle. It's not a bus. It's not a gun.

Can't you all see it's a picture of Columbine High School? the 2 faces in the window are Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the tethered stick figures are students hangin out the school windows trying to get to safety, the little stick figure on top of the building is police/SWAT and the 3rd smiling face is the student that drew this wishing he was a 3rd killer. He shaped it slightly like a gun cause of subconscious thought.

It's clear this kid was planning a school massacre - to hell with it being a gun - this was a blueprint for a mass high-school shooting!
