'Bring your gun to work' movement picks up support

    Thoughts on this story? Spin...Spin..Spin...

It's every employer's nightmare. A year ago, Edgar Tillery was told by his supervisor at the Indiana Workforce Development Department that his performance as an auditor was subpar, and that he should shape up or consider resigning.

His response? He went outside to his parked car, grabbed a gun, and came back firing, court documents say.

Indiana is now one of 13 states that grant such rights to employees. The spread of "parking lot" or "bring your gun to work" laws stems in part from the landmark 2008 Supreme Court ruling that struck down the District of Columbia's handgun ban.

    I love this line:

The employee gun rights movement is misguided, says George Raymond, vice president for human resources and labor relations at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. "We might have shootouts in the parking lots like it's the OK Corral."

Because Shall Issue States turned into warzones, right? Oh wait, that didn't happen. This kind of fear-inducing alarmist talk sadly carries more weight than logic and statistics.

    *sigh*

      LOL

This morning, my boss called me over to his vehicle. I assumed he wanted to show me his new sound system, as I'd seen him do with a few other employees.

No. He pulled out a handgun in the parking lot and showed it to me. Nice little firearm too.

Bring your guns to work? Some of us already do. And no, my work has NOTHING to do with firearms.

If I ever had a company with employees, they'd be armed or they wouldn't be my employees.

My only concern would be around property rights. If the owner of a business does not want firearms in the work place (offices/company parking lot/lunch room) it's up to them right?

Same rule if an employer said you can't have a Bible or a six-pack of beer or a child carseat in your car, right?

              Absolutely right!

If it is legal and it is in your (locked) car, then it is (or certainly should be) nothing to do with anybody else. Not that I'd leave firearms in plain sight in my car in the company parking lot, but then, I wouldn't anyway out in the street, and for the same reasons.

I'd argue that having a firearm in your car is a First Amendment statement, affirming your belief in the Second.

Correct. If the company says no beer or religious materials in the work place, they are within their rights. Children's car seats are a Federal requirement..

My guess is only if a child of a suitable age (for a child seat), is in the car and it is moving (and maybe only if it is on a public road).

People who move to "free states" are in for a rude awakening. Those "shall-issue" states are fricken warzones. Dead, burnt bodies. Blood, guts. The hardest thing about going to work is dodging all the dead people riddled with bullet holes littering the streets.

My work has a sign posted out front that says "no weapons permitted on premises" I've been wondering about the legality of this. They even went as far as to limit the length of pocket knife blades to 2" and overall length t 3"

I never thought of bringing a firearm to work, but it sure would cut down on all the quibbling in those damn design meetings.

I used to keep a safe full at my office and another one at the range I worked at. My boss did ask me to move my 1919 after it sat on a tripod, in my office for 3 weeks. He said that it was getting in the way.
