My Mom wasn't big on guns..... well, until I gave her a Mosin 91/30, that is. Now the little 75 year old grandma has great fun attaching the bayonet and charging mock-enemy trenches in her living room.

I tell them to read Popcorn Sutton's tombstone.sigpic
Then, Sir, we will give them the bayonet! (Stonewall Jackson's reply to Colonel B.E. Bee when he reported that the enemy were beating them back. At the first battle of Bull Run, July 1861)

I simply let them rant then say Ok well that's your opinion. NOT arguing with someone who wants to argue is more infuriating to them than it will ever be for me. I just leave it at that. I don't even bother offering to take them to the range.Comment

+1 - my nieces husband is a born and raised Scotsman and therefore fully indoctrinated into the "guns are evil" school that is so prevalent in the UK. He used to make some snide remarks about owning/shooting guns every now and again.
I invited him shooting a while back. He spent the afternoon shooting my 1917 Eddystone, went through a couple hundred rounds of surplus Lake City. He had a ball.
Afterwards he said "That was fun, now I get it. It's about the precision of shooting (he was hitting a 200 yard gong regularly) and it's just plain fun."
He still hasn't grasped the whoe 2nd ammendment thing, but I'm working on him.
He hasn't bugged me about guns since. In fact, he regularly asks when we are going to the range next.

Well this is what one person said to me "I don't understand why you are so into guns no one in our family has every owned them and it upsets me to see were you might be going with them Please be safe"
And another "U r obsessed with guns! Find a new interest like bowling or something"
Yah, I have gotten that too. I relate guns to interests that they have (bicycling, sewing, underwater basket weaving, whatever) and distinguish the hobby from the bad actions of people. When doing this with a inquisitive discussion based tone, it usually gets them to thinking. To me, that is success!
We have a long uphill battle here in Cali that with diligence and solid information, we can make major strides in (look at Calguns!).Comment

I turn it around.
Them: "Why do you feel the need to own guns?"
Me: "Why do you care what I own? I don't tell you what you should or should not possess."
Them: "No one should be able to own guns."
Me: "Really? You going to come take them from me?"
Them: "No... that's the job of the police."
Me: "So you want police to come in my house and try to take my guns, even though I will defend my right to keep my guns at almost any cost? I'm not the only gun owner who feels that way, you know. You'd be sending a lot of cops to their deaths because you don't yourself have the courage to enforce a law you want passed. I'm willing to die for my right to own a gun, are you willing to do the same to take my rights away?"
Them: "..."
I've had this conversation a few times. It usually shuts them up because they see my passion for gun ownership is much stronger than their passion as an anti. Either that or they think I'm crazy... but I don't care!Last edited by oldrifle; 12-01-2010, 12:41 PM.-- Proud Donor. Please join me in donating now to help protect our 2nd amendment rights.

Just smile and say nothing. When the shtf, they will come to you. Then you can say, "sorry, I can't help you, I got rid of them because you didn't like them. Go fend for yourself."BurninsomeComment

Ask why they own vehicles:
~223 million guns in USA / 29,569 total firearm deaths (suicides = 20,993(71%)) = 1 death per 26,002 firearms
~65 million vehicles in USA / 33,963 total deaths from vehicle crashes = 1 death per 1,913 vehicles
~13.6 X more likely to be killed by a vehicle then a firearm or, firearms are 13.6 X safer then cars

One needs the use of a vehicle to get around, one doesnt NEED to carry around an empty gun to the local coffee shop? Bad analogy.....I dont have an issue with your hobby but it appears to be allconsuming? Its just scary Mitchell thats all.Pew Pew Pew.Comment
