I like this answer.I'm not sure how old you are, but I don't feel the need to justify my hobbies or interests to anybody. While I don't "hide" my interests, accordingly I don't force them upon others who have no interest. This applies not only to firearms related hobbies, but others as well. If someone shows an interest, I am happy to educate them, but I try not to be one of "those guys" who force a conversation upon someone. You'll find that there are some folks who are curious enough to learn the positive aspects of firearm ownership and those that are too close minded to listen.
Different strokes for different folks, no need to get defensive.
I would never ask anyone why they choose the hobbies they do, whether it be golf, dirt bikes, fishing, or sky diving.
The people doing the asking are the one's with the boorish behavior.Comment

My sister is extremely anti-gun, and I have told her point blank. A single word from her aganst my 2a rights, so much as a peep, and I will cut off all contact with her for good, and disown her as a sister.
To this date she has kept her liberal mouth shut around me."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man - Thomas JeffersonComment

Let her run her mouth, remind her if she expects you to be "open-minded", she needs to reciprocate the "open-mindedness"...if she expects you to see her point of view, she needs to see your point of view and must go shooting with you if she expects to make any comments...that way it's 'her' decision on whether she runs her mouth or not

Agreed. She has her first amendment rights...and exercising those rights doesn't warrant disowning a family member. Threats and Arguments aren't likely to win people over.Let her run her mouth, remind her if she expects you to be "open-minded", she needs to reciprocate the "open-mindedness"...if she expects you to see her point of view, she needs to see your point of view and must go shooting with you if she expects to make any comments...that way it's 'her' decision on whether she runs her mouth or not

Ain't my way, had the same talk with a uncle 10 years back who decided to convert and become a muslum. Ain't talked to him from that date, *snip* cut right out of my life.Let her run her mouth, remind her if she expects you to be "open-minded", she needs to reciprocate the "open-mindedness"...if she expects you to see her point of view, she needs to see your point of view and must go shooting with you if she expects to make any comments...that way it's 'her' decision on whether she runs her mouth or not
I got no time for idiots and fools, my life is complex enough without the drama.
You handle it your way I will mine."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . I don't bring the subject up.
I collect guns because they interest me, the same reason people collect anything.
I study WW1 history and the development of the bolt rifle.
I shoot because it's a legal hobby, a sport, and it's fun.
As far as what is NOT in the safe for HD, that question doesn't get an answer.
I don't care what anybody thinks about any of the above. If they don't want guns, they don't have to buy them. If they don't like me having guns, F. . . Them. I don't care for debating, negotiating, or selling. If they want to think they hold a higher moral ground, then let them. Nothing frustrates someone more than "winning" an argument and then having the loser go on doing whatever they want.
"I thought you agreed it was a bad idea."
"Yup"
"But you're still going to do it."
"Yup"
"Why?"
"Because I don't care whether you're right or not or what you think."
"I can't stand here and watch this."
"Then don't. Goodbye."
If they are in my house belittling or interrogating me, they can leave. I don't care who they are.NRA Lifetime Member

The most amount of heckling I've ever gotten was from my dad when I came home with a bunch of ammo. Actually it was more of a joke. He was saying I was like my godfather who thought the russians were gonna invade( which before he died he thought it was going to happen a la "Red Dawn").
Other than that when I tell people that I have gun most of them ask what kind and overall seem pretty interested. One guy tried giving me **** because I said I liked to assemble AR-15 for friends (which I do, even though they could do it them selves).USMC '05-'09 - 2111 - Keeper Of The Cold Steel

What do you say when people heckle you about owning firearms? It seems like theres always the people; family members, or not who dislike everything about our hobbies and interesst. I was told today to find a new hobby, people being scared where Im "going" with "guns". Not once have I done anything unsafe, unethical, unmoral, or stupid with a firearm they are my hobby and protection as well as all of my fellow calgunners. So once again what am i supposed to say to get my point across my answers never seem to be good enough for people.
I usually just tell them to F off........Comment

Don't bother
Eventually talking to an idiot makes you look like one yourself. I just look at em and say, "One day someone is going to make you wish you had a gun...but it'll be too late to save your ignorant arse."What do you say when people heckle you about owning firearms? Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.Last edited by BC9696; 11-30-2010, 3:48 PM.Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.Comment

It sure does. So, I just thought of a reply.
"Why do you have to hide behind locked doors at night when you go to sleep?"
I think that works to deflect and put the thought process back on the instigator.

I tell em this its better to have a gun and never need it vs. wishing you had one when the time comes.Originally posted by aklonIn 1775 we stood up.

When I first got into guns I had some family members hassle me over the fact I owned a gun, but that quickly changed and over time I haven't had a problem with family members or close firends all have been very acceptable of the fact I own firearms, in fact from time to time I get emails, text's with questions in reguards to firearms, gun laws, hunting, from them I gladly answer the question because most of the time it was somebody telling them FUd and ask me about what was told to them, and during the process I have intrested some family members into becoming gun owners!sigpicComment

I work at Kaiser Permanente... the folks that sponsor the gay pride parade through SF. I routinely mention my guns, and I get nothing but support. Once someone asked if I keep them unloaded since they knew I had young kids. There has been nothing negative about my guns though.
If someone *DID* heckle me, I would be quick to turn in around and mock them about how stupid they were to be afraid in inanimate objects. My hammer has killed the exact same number of living things that my guns have, but it would be much less effective in warding off a criminal breaking into my home.~Jarrod~Comment

Exactly , never been heckled...but have been asked by family and friends " You're a 6'5" 300 pound black belt with a shaved head , WTH do you need a gun for ? "
My answer is simple, and is related to your quote....from 15 feet away that sideways 9mm with a highcap magazine ( CA laws dont apply to criminals ) in the hands of a 15 year old 120 pound gangbanger makes my size and fighting prowess worth zero.
It doesnt even have to involve a firearm, your car breaks down on your way to that indian casino out in the middle of nowhere ...and a truck full of guys pulls in behind you to ask you " What ju got " .
I dont give a damn if you are the baddest man on the planet , it doesnt go down like it does in the movies...you are screwed without an equalizer.
Just a couple sentances like that , and all you hear is the sound of them backpedalingComment
