Of course for the same effect, a slight boom on impact...
If you have an explosion in front of your bullet, wouldn't that force be 180 degrees from the force of the bullet?

Sure, acetylene explodes at 29psi, but I don't think the pressure curve from a passing bullet is long enough to destabilize the gas. I may be wrong, and I'm getting more curious to find out , but I'm just not seeing it.

I didn't think that a lead bullet hitting a steel plate would cause a spark, but after our night match last weekend, I know I was wrong. A fellow shooter shot steel plates with a 45acp loaded with lead 200gr swc's. There was a nice spark/glow in a circular pattern when the bullet impacted the steel.

As far as the bottles filled with acetylene and oxygen, I have no idea.

That's actually minute bits of the steel getting torn away. Think rust. The lead itself will not spark.

The CSI derivative shows certainly didn't start the non-science nonsense. Bought my wife the entire 5 year series of Hunter on DVD (she loves Fred).

In one of the first year episodes, a guy gets shot through his "bullet proof vest" because the bad guy was shooting "silicone coated bullets." Gotta love Hollywood, huh?

I don't bother with Nitro tipped bullets or depleted uranium. Those don't do enough damage.

I want the Iruudium PU36 Explosive Space Modulator tipped bullets. I hear they can blow up the Earth.

Along the same lines, last night I saw an episode of Law and Order (or one of those shows) where the handgun in question was bought in Ca and then moved to another state and stolen. The "registered owner" of the gun was questions and informed the police that he did not report it stolen because he knew that it was illegal for him to take the gun out of Ca.

I really wonder where these shows get their technical "experts" people from.

CSI keeps me going with the fantasy until they do something really weird. My favorite part to this day is:

Are those nitoglycerin bullets similar to those heat seeking bullets some elected official complained about?

                                Ya... CSI is great comedy.
The only problem is politicians and juries believe it's not fiction, so politicians take actions to criminalize elements shown in the show, and juries expect to see a 100% bulletproof case. The whole concept of reasonable doubt has gone out the window, and the judges do nothing to correct it. After the Michael Jackson and OJ cases, several jurors made the comment of "shadow of a doubt"... which is something drilled into the heads of those who attend evangelical Christian churches. That frame of mind has crossed over into the judicial system.

Of course, "shadow of a doubt" goes out the window for defendants that aren't famous.
