Dias or real auto sear works the same way in burst or in full.
The sear is the hammer RELEASE timing mechanism that makes sure the carrier is forward before the hammer is released for each shot.
The 3rd burst parts just interrupt the hammer's cycle by release of the disconnector via the ratchet.

Being a Class 2 SOT helps. I made this machine gun back in March of 09 because I was bored and had nothing else to do. So I made a machine gun. Had the receiver built. Cost me $13 in parts and 15 minutes of my time.

On a real sear gun, you just bend the sear until the sear releases at the proper location.
The proper location is determined with gauge pins between the front face of the bolt carrier and the rear face of the barrel extension.

On a Dias gun, you file on the sear.

You just made a comment above that would make most people think a DIAS worked different than a regular sear gun.
That's why I mentioned they work the same.

Well I'll tell ya what, if I make a fully automatic rifle and on the Form 2 write "full auto" or "automatic rifle", the ATF will reject it unless it states specifically "machine gun".

On my site I use the terms suppressor and automatic weapons.

There is a ratcheting pawl on one side of the hammer that causes the disconnector to be defeated for 3 hammer drops.
The 4th time the hammer comes back, the pawl releases the disconnector which grabs the hammer.
You have to release the trigger to un-set the disconnector.
This releases control of the hammer to the trigger.
The next time you pull the trigger, the hammer falls 3 more times until the disconnector grabs it again.
Releasing the trigger anytime during the burst will cause the hammer to rest against the trigger again even if it was only after 1 or 2 shots.
I think that the next trigger pull will cause a short burst as you would be using up the remaining 1 or 2 shots on the pawl before it disconnects again.
Having never fired an M16A2 or M4, I don't know if the pawl resets or not after a short burst.
