Aren't there any bridges near San Diego? If the guy had jumped off a bridge, it would have been more effective and it wouldn't have given the antis ammunition for more antigun laws.

The Coronado bridge would've done the trick. Maybe he was too broke to have gas money and only could afford the one round that put 'em in the hospital.

a gent i work with either worked with that guy or in the same company as him lol. having no EOD exp even i would of thought that was a tremendously stupid idea, Your butt is a lot cheaper to replace.

My sister is an ER doc and advised me that if I wanted to commit suicide with a gun, I should place the muzzle against the temple and aim for the middle of the skull.

Her advice came from seeing many unsuccessful suicides in her ER.

I responded to the scene of a gunshot wound and witnessed a very similar situation. The man was laying on his back, neck propped up with a pillow on his bed. A Taurus 4" barrel revolver was lying at his side. He had tried to commit suicide by gun. He had placed the barrel under his chin, barrel toward his brain. At time of ignition, the barrel was angled improperly. The round blew his lower jaw all over the room (his dog was eating his teeth).

Apart from choking on his own blood, being unable to talk (gurgling), he didn't seem in all that bad of a mood. He shook my hand. It was surreal.

If the barrel would have been canted a little differently, he would probably be dead. The bullet did a straight line into the wall above his head.

I heard he went into shock and nearly died soon after ambulance transport. He must have had adrenaline or something to act so cool.

Crazy survival stories like these are even more common among those who try to commit suicide under the influence of crystal meth. I read about one who was under the influence of meth and shot himself in the head with a shotgun, another with an AK. Most likely bad placement or a combination of both, but meth turns people into real life zombies so hard to take down even with gunfire.

Last Friday night we got a 24 year old male that decided he was going to end his life with a .45 to the head. He placed the gun to the bottom of his jaw, aiming up, and pulled the trigger. He was about 1 inch too far to the left and blasted a golf ball sized hole through his chin and OUT his mouth. I wish there were no HIPPA/confidentiality laws and I could post up some pics from his chart, but there are so I can't. It was an amazing wound, the bullet ripped a hole through his jaw and took away a lot of tissue, bone, and teeth.
Now for the weird part, he never lost concsiousness, and came in yelling and screaming at everyone to go away and let him die! He seemed pretty unimpressed with the .45's stopping power. His tox screen was negative, and he only had a small amount of alcohol on board.
I know many people in the gun world think that the .45 acp is a death ray and that any hit from it is a fight stopper, however this shooting shows me that it is still "just" a handgun round and not final word in stopping power.

It's hard to blow your brains out when you lack them in the first place. Now for the important question...Did the gun get hurt? Was it dropped or did blood ruin the finish? Do you think it may be for sale to cover medical bills?

Hopefully he turns his life around for the better realizing that he has something to live for. I hate seeing suicides as they just suck for everyone involved. I handled a number of them at the mortuary I worked at and NOTHING good comes out of a suicide. Sorry for his family.

Stopping power is overrated in my opinion. Shot placement is more important. From my work, I see more deaths with smalll caliber bullets than "major" calibers. I see plenty of 1 round kills with 22LR or 25 Auto rounds.

You've got your Hemmingway and your Cobaine both very effective. There is also the Hendrix but that is only reserved for the more "experienced" however it does not require a gun.

Most pistol rounds of any caliber shot at long distances are perceivable to the eye.
