I'm SO glad I don't work a job where I'd have to see that. Sure a .45 isn't magical instant death like it was laced with poison, but there have been PLENTY on the receiving end of that round in a few major wars who sure didn't argue with it too well.

You can lose your whole jaw and the front of your face without much issue, the round or means is pretty irrelevant.

There was a boy in my town that pulled the same stunt - put a shotgun under his chin. Problem is the blast blows your head backwards and so it always comes out your mouth basically. He blew his jaw and the front of his face off pretty badly but lived just fine - albeit with a lot of surgeries afterwards to try to reconstruct him.

        Sad.

Yeah, this is no knock on the .45....the guy had poor shot placement. Period. Had he actually shot himself in the head....he would be dead. Probly true also if he had shot himself point blank in the chest....

The .45ACP is a killer...and this guy was just too dumb to kill himself efficiently.

Now take that same round and place it in your forehead or over your heart its a different story. he could of been holding the gun at a bad angle or last minute twitch or clench of the finger spasm etc changed the angle of the gun and barrel so the bullet got his jaw

sounds like he forgot the importance of fine trigger control at the most important moment. that's why i get to the range often so that i always pull smooth and straight back on the tip of my finger pad without thought everytime...

Years ago, an older kid in my neighborhood tried to cap himself with a 20 gauge. Either he chickened out at the last instant, or he just aimed bad, 'cause all he ended up doing was blowing the crap out of his jaw and the side of his face. Much surgery later, and covered by a full beard and you can barely tell what happened.

...I know many people in the gun world think that the .45 acp is a death ray and that any hit from it is a fight stopper
Hence why most people realize that it's shot placement, not caliber, that makes the difference.

.45 ACP is still a great round, but if you shoot the wrong place even .50BMG is survivable.

So the shot and gasses going through your head cause your head to move faster than the projectiles to redirect them up and away...

That doesn't sound right, and the kid was another story of poor placement. Take a look at some tests with ballistic gelatin. The bullets are most of the way through the gelatin before it begins to react with movement.
