1911 vs. Glock wars! Which one is better!

ah, yes, the good old 1911 vs Glock debate. Just like 9mm vs. .45acp, bean or no beans, AR vs AK, this will not go anywhere.

Question is "For what purpose?"

For general purpose, including arming a group of people, Glock wins without much debate. They are very easy to maintain and fix, not to mention use. You don't have to have a skilled craftsman to fit it. As someone said, if you treat your guns like a lawn mower, Glock is the way to go.

1911s on the other hand is a great design that is extremely ergonomic for more people. Theoretically, the straight pull of the trigger enables better cleaner trigger pull. It can be made in various configurations, from a simple "GI" model to a high end model. If I were to choose a pistol for precise and accurate shooting, 1911s have more areas to take advantage of.

they are so different. i don't own a glock because i simply don't like plastic handguns (Glock, XD etc). I personally just don't shoot well with them. As much as I want to like them, I don't. Too bad as a G17 costs about half as much as my Kimber

It's funny I just came across this post in the thread titled, What is your most unreliable gun?

Kimber Tactical Pro II - the most rounds it's gone between a failure to feed has been 80. It's been back to Kimber once with no joy. Now it sits in the safe.

I really doubt you'll see anyone mention a glock, or my preference an HK...

I wouldn't say high end 1911 are ready to rock from the box. I hardly ever heard of a 1911 especially a high end one work out of the box without any tweaks. Maybe expect for the ones that cost about $2000.

But if you are doing that... You aren't comparing two things that are equal. Once again, you can't compare a $700 gun to a $2000. There are people who bring brand nib glocks to matchs and shoot them out of the box and do great. That's the beauty of a glock.

Actually now that I think of it, I am sure someone here mention that they had problems with their "high end" 1911.

High end 1911's are made for competition shooting. The tight tolerances are no good for combat. I would take my Colt Government 1911 over a Glock any day though. I've also never heard of this happening to a 1911.

Is that your glock? Do you know why that happened? I see that happen because people use reloads and dont know the specs.

Comparing my Para 1911 and my Glock 19. I love the 1911, but the Glock wins due to quantity. I have pre-ban mags for it. So 15 vs 8. Without the factor of the quantity. They are pretty much dead even. I don't like the take down of the 1911, but I love it's weight. I love the Glocks take down, but wish it was heavier.

If the SHTF and I only had time to grab one of them. I'd grab the Glock. It's a 9mm and it's lighter weight. Meaning more ammo.

Around the house though my 1911 keeps me safe

The Blown up Glock Pic I posted was a Glock 22, 40 cal. Shooting jacketed reloads. Happened Saturday at our range in Concord. All I have ever seen was blown up Glocks & Pics of blown up Glocks. Yeah, they may have had an idiot reload. But there has to be some idiot reloads shooting out of 1911's. Never seen a pic of a blown up 1911.

Glocks can be reliable, but they're less idiot proof than a 1911.

Glocks are anything but perfection but if I could only have one gun it would be a Glock. Self defense if the main reason I own a gun so I have the mindset that reliability comes over everything else. The main problem with exploding glocks are unsafe reloading practices. Their are cases of factory ammo causing problems but nothing is 100%. I do love my 1911's but if I could carry it would be a Glock over a 1911 any day.

To be more fair price range wise I'll compare my Glock 17 to my RIA 1911 GI. Both ended at around $500 plus or minus $50.

The RIA 1911 appears to be much more accurate. I've only been shooting pistols for a few months now, but I can put a fist sized group at 10 yards with the 1911. However, with my Glock 17 at the same distance, groups opens up to two fists with some flyers.

The Glock 17 is hands down the most reliable. I haven't had a single problem with the Glock after hundreds of rounds. The 1911, however, has about 2 jams per 50 rounds. One type of jam occurs with the last round in the magazine feeding improperly resulting in a FTRTB. I suspect this is either due to my extractor having too much tension or is a magazine problem. The other type of jam occurs when a feeding round manages to push up the slide stop lever and holds open the slide. Although I haven't passed the 500 round breaking in period with the 1911, I didn't have to do this with the Glock.

Both guns have their strengths and weaknesses. Just buy them both and have fun!
