i would have been concerned about her ill at ease causing her to violate the 180 rule and point the gun in my direction.
Was at an outdoor range, smaller framed woman, trying to rack a slide on a 40 cal semi auto. kept pulling it to her chest, thereby pointing at me. Then racking it.
Told hubby to show her how to use the push pull method. He blew me off, next time I took ut from her. unloaded it and it to the RSO.
      they were asked to leave.
I see nothing wrong with OP's situational awareness.
      The long story however....

        You rookies crack me up.

My wife wanted to shoot sporting clays with me. So I took her out to the shotgun range with a 12 gauge, loaded with duck loads.

        She hasn't been back since.

My wife likes gardening, and I probably have spent more time building up her bird/critter free garden last year than I spent time shooting. But that's okay.
In return I can something enjoy a $250 tomato and more often go shooting now while she digs in the dirt.

I made sure early on that my future ex-wife would accept that I was into guns, fishing, and motorcycles and that would not change unless I decided to change it. She was ok with that and things worked out well. She didn't really enjoy those activities but would go with me once in awhile. She did her thing, I did mine.
I think you nailed it. There are variations to the theme. Very few couples are compatible 100%, share everything, but when one partner demands "no more motorcyles," or "you should not work on your old cars anymore," or wants you to join their church/temple/mosque, or tells you that there can be "no guns in their house," things clearly won't work out as a couple in the long run.

Again, my policy is not to discuss politics, guns, religion, or money, with folks who clearly showed me that they are on a totally different planet on this. Discussing that sh*t at a family gathering can turn a great event into a total disaster.

My guns mostly live in safes out in my shop with just a couple hidden in the house for bumps in the night.
My wife went from not wanting to be able to SEE any guns in the house to it being a good idea to have a few more guns in the house.
Now I have a house carbine and a plate carrier with plates and mags in a corner by the front door.

There's no crying at the range.

Unless of course you end up with GLOCK leg.

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

My wife LIKES to go shooting---if we're not going often enough, she will suggest a shooting day! She shoots my 22 rifles well, but not my old Browning SA-22 with bottom ejection (hot spent cases can enter girls clothing---an unpleasant experience I'm told) and her Kahr CW9 (DAO) and sometimes my HK P2000SK 9mm "Light" LEM (DAO) and even likes my Mini 14... She considers it an essential skill... Just lucky I guess...!

My wife beats me at darts. It’s pretty f ing humbling since she’s played 3 or 4 times total in her life. I quit asking her to play…

Ditto. Not only does mine like to shoot, she's a much better shot than me! I have to leave my "shooting ego" in the car when we go to the range together ;-)

RSOs are always complimenting her on her shooting. I think it's also for other reasons, LOL. Men will be men!

I tell my son probably not a bad idea to bring up the "so how do you feel about guns?" topic before things get too serious with a partner (like on the second date, LOL).

Pretty sure she thought there were going to be Dan Wesson revolvers and Springfield Operators but only to find out there were Glocks and Hi Points.
