honestly, compared to the revolvers i've totally disassembled and put back together, this was fairly easy if we don't count the j-spring issue with the hammer

your method worked for me too but i do admit i was puzzled for a bit - thought it might be a defect and i didn't want to mess with it too much

I've always used a small punch to long up the game as a slave pin. The punch being smaller is easier to line up. Then use the hammer pin to drive out the punch while being sure the pin enters the hole on the hammer.

That all said I've just about given up on milspec triggers. You can get a drop in cassette style trigger for under $100 on sale and any of those will be light years better than a milspec trigger. Of course the more expensive are usually better but prices shoot up for minor improvements. There are several trigger round ups that have come to this same conclusion. So something like a Rise 140 for about $100 is a great deal and dead simple to install.

got my upper in and finished the build - turned out pretty good, now i just need to get out and take it for a test drive

im thinking i want to add a carry handle - prices ranges i've seen are all over the place but i do want a good one

maybe someone who has done some builds can recommended me a good handle and a price range i can expect to pay

Looks good. You will want to function check the safety and trigger

If you have dummy rounds you can function check with those to be sure the rounds are feeding manually and that the bolt hold open works.

Looks good. I don't know what you have under the stock but you have a carbine barrel matched with what appears to be a rifle buffer, spring, and buffer tube. You might have a mis-match there. If so, you might experience some mis-feeds and ejection problems. You are going to need a carbine buffer, spring, and buffer tube.

And as far as the carry handle goes, if you want a carry handle, get yourself an A2 upper. I never understood the appeal of the bolt-on carry handles. But, to each, their own.

you may have a great point there, and no, i never verified the compatibility of the buffer, spring, and tube that came with my stock

worst case, i need to buy the proper buffer, spring, tube for that carbine, easy enough i hope

as far as the handle, i would love to have an A2 upper, i see them for sale but couldn't find one complete that i like - maybe for next build i'll look harder because i agree with you, i really don't like the bolt-on but for this build that ship has sailed

anyway, thanks for the heads up on the stock, i'll look into it

the link for the stock that i purchased came with many photos of finished AR's, several of them carbine length - hopefully that is a good indication, if not i'll just use that stock on my next AR build and purchase another stock for the carbine

Ya, that is an A2 rifle stock with a rifle buffer. Carbine buffers are shorter. They don't extend out from the spring like that one does. Your rifle actually looks good with that stock. To tell you the truth, I can't remember if the buffer tubes are different lengths between rifle and carbine. I never really compared mine. My carbines have collapsible stocks (pinned) so the buffer tubes are different. Besides the buffer, I'm pretty sure the springs are different also. If I get a chance, I'll measure my buffer tubes later on and get back to you.

Note, if you buy the spring and buffer separately, 9mm buffers are the same size but are heavier than 223/556 and they are usually black. You don't want one of them. Carbine buffers weigh about 3 oz. and 9mm buffers weigh about 5.4 oz.

Ok, so I got curious and there's no time like the present. The carbine buffer tube measures about 7 1/4". The rifle buffer tube measure measures about 10". Ok, since we are on the subject, both A1 and A2 rifles use the same length buffer tube. The A2 has a spacer installed at the end of the buffer tube to accommodate the longer A2 stock.

So you would need a carbine spring and buffer. And to use the rifle stock, I'm guessing somebody sells an adapter. Maybe a spacer that goes inside the rifle buffer tube for the carbine spring to sit on. You could probably make one out of PVC or a wood dowel but you would have to know its length. I'm guessing 2 3/4" for starters.

disassembled the stock from the lower - here's what it looks like size wise - don't mind my cats feet, i was using her area and she didn't like it so she bogarted into her spot

i also found this bit of information on a site that was having this very discussion about using an A2 stock on a carbine - does it make any sense?

keep in mind it's me, the noob builder

found a discussion about this, and a few photos at this site: https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/A2...rs/118-560003/

wish there was more discussion about the stock compatibilities when using with a carbine, i.e buffers, springs, tubes, or adjustments made for the best performance

I’ve never done it, but I’d probably take both a rifle buffer and a carbine buffer with me to the range and see what happens.

I can tell you that I have a 18” DI upper that I use with a carbine buffer and tube. But I have used it with one of my rifle lowers and she worked just fine. I know that really doesn’t help with your 16” carbine.
