When I was reaching what to carry in my G26, I saw many failures to expand in the 147 gr offerings in shorter barreled handguns. Expansion and penetration in 115 gr Gold Dots seems pretty consistent in any barrel length. Now, the BPLE 115 +P+, well, it has very good "street cred" and makes a pretty nasty wound channel and good penetration in gel. Jacket separation is a problem due to it being an un-bonded older design.

HST 124gr. Glad I picked up several boxes of this stuff last year.

I'm thinking the lighter bullet = higher velocity = better penetration ballistics.

My LGS used to have a stash of 10mm Hornady Critical Defense so that's that.

Federal HST Micro 9mm is 150 grains, and it's designed for the smallest of carry pistols.

Will your choice of ammo be another thing your attorney has to contend with, or not? If you're carrying the same ammo as your local police department vs RIP ammo, which one would your defense attorney rather you do?

What is the clown ratio of guys carrying RIP ammo vs guys carrying 124 Speer Gold Dot or 147 Federal HST?

The cop in court has nothing to do with ammo...and the judge did toss the dust cover inscription.

I mainly use Federal HST and Winchester Ranger-T regardless of caliber.

That's Mas Ayoob's opinion. What's interesting is that he' unable to cite a case where ammo type was an issue in a good shoot.

Um...no...that's my opinion. I don't need Ayoob to tell me the stupidity of carrying something that's marketed as "RIP ammo," or something that no law enforcement agency in the country will carry, when there are plenty of options for well proven defense ammo.

That said, we all know that handgun ammo, regardless of brand, are still inferior to rifles in terms of ballistics/stopping power...

So, what do we do?

As already mentioned by some...

Judgment, reaction time and shot placement are infinitely more important than the shape, speed and construction of your projectile, assuming the projectile meets minimum requirements.

Personally - this ammo debate is like beating an old horse. I don't see much debate on defensive ammo from CGners I personally know that instructs, trains, shoots or competes on a regular basis...

What is everyone carrying for their CCW?

I finally broke the bank and picked up a box of G2 R.I.P for my H&K VP9SK for about $2.05/round and picked up some 10mm Lehigh Defense Xtreme Penetrator for my Glock 29 for $1.82/round. My lady has a mag of polymer tip Hornady's Critical Duty for her Walther PPQ.

I hate paying about $2 bucks a round, but that is the market right now. I was carrying some 9mm Freedom Munitions remanufactured HP until I bit the bullet and stepped it up with the G2.
