I just inventoried 55 guns for a lady that was her dads here in the bay area.
A lot of shotguns in ok condition and some repo pistols for cowboy shooting.
My feeling is the shotguns are not a big seller.
Time and trouble to gunbroker them means you have to get them at 1/3 going rate to make worth while IMHO.
And to get top dollar someone has to want them or hold out fro right buyer.Comment

Sorry for your friend's loss.
As previously stated, hard to tell from the pictures but here could be a Win 1890, maybe another Win 1906????? To the left of it and maybe some type of lever gun to the left of that ?????????? If so, just 2 of these 3, if in good condition, could be worth what was quoted or more.
Bottom line, take it slow, figure out what it is that your friend actually has and then start looking at prices from an informed position - make, model, condition, etc. Sure, it will take some effort but yield worth it for the remains spouse.
Anybody here on Calguns would like a $100 gun - I'm down for 6 to 8 Win 1890s at that price
- but unless it is a fire sale or the rifles are inoperable, I believe the executor can do better for the spouse.

Thank you all for your valuable input.
Sorry about the pic size, but I don't know how to resize them.
I already suggested that she needs to get another appraisal ASAP. I'm not sure what relation the XO of the estate is to the widow, so I'm not sure of his/her intentions. A quick, easy sell or most $$ for the estate.
I have asked for more details on each item and will post as soon as I receive them.Comment

Offer to buy the collection for $1500 from the executor and see what happens.
Then sell them here at fair price and give the money to the widow, keep one for yourself for the work maybe.Originally posted by Kestryll:

Mr. Wizard, what general area of NorCal is she in? Someone might be able to recommend a shop to have them appraised. If she is around Sacramento I had a few guns appraised at J and G Gunsmithing in Granite bay, there will be a small charge but she will get an honest evaluation and price.Comment

If the executor knew nothing about guns, went to a gunstore or a pawnshop and asked what they were worth - he would get a 33 to 40% valuation from them.
They may not know what they are looking at too, take some better pics here and let the people here research them - and you can post in the for sale area - will certainly do better than that lowball offer.
I remember listening to a gunstore employee at Trader's back in the 80's telling of how he got a Mauser Broomhandle with stock and holster rig for 150 bucks from a widow - he said it was easily worth a grand back then....figuring the executor got a similar treatment now.Last edited by Rogerbutthead; 10-02-2020, 4:14 PM.Comment

The appraisal is very low. Unless those firearms are really worn, abused, or rusted beyond repair. I'd probably give them close to twice that.
I can't tell too much from the photos, but it looks like there is a Winchester Model 61 pump .22 that I can make out. That alone is worth a few hundred.
When my Dad passed they valued his guns at just a small fraction of their market value. I was appreciative because I had to pay taxes, so it helped to keep the tax bill down. The appraisals where also very low on furnishings and tools. The appraiser, we had a private one, just walked around and ticked off the value. They down go and look at books or anything much. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the appraiser just counted the number of guns and basically multiplied by $100Last edited by ScottsBad; 10-02-2020, 4:39 PM.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment

Middle picture gun on far left is a pump action Remington model 12. If that guns bore is good it's worth $200 all day long....those little guns are a hoot. Mine is from 1912....they were made up into the 30's I think off the top of my head.
If I'm seeing those pics right there are two sets of guns....close to thirty guns there....time for a better appraisal.Last edited by boattail; 10-02-2020, 7:56 PM.JACComment
