New shooters. That's why. They need to get the hang of it.

All you need to know about indoor ranges can be found in the amount of bullet strikes on the floor, walls and ceiling in front of each shooting bay.

Having to go to one every 2 years to qualify is annoying at best.

Find a private range if possible.

Fixed it. And they keep shooting because every old cowboy movie they shoot a can 8 times before it hits the ground and every current movie they keep shooting the bad guy as he dances around with every shot.

I totally forgot a part of my OP, haha.

I see it more often than I'd like... hangar gets popped and the offender keeps... shooting.. at... it. Just reel that thing in and steady it... duh!

Multiple RSOs are always on hand at this place and lanes are camera monitored.

I've been to other ranges in the area... some have you pass a basic handling/competency test before you even go in the lanes if you're an unfamiliar face or not a member. Some do not.

I'm not for excessive nannying/hall monitor behavior but when bullet fragments start hitting me I don't take kindly to it.

I've been going to ranges since '07 and I've been zipped by fragments 4 times, two of them were in the last 2 months. Coincidence?

Anyways - I'm in central Orange County but would be OK with driving for a bit to get to a private Range. Any recommendations?

This. You don't need to be nasty about it. Everyone started at some point. OP could have taken the opportunity to educate the shooter a bit and come across as a nice guy. Instead he chose to complain and tell the teacher.

We should always be welcoming of new members and new shooters. Take a moment to set a good example for us so noobs pursue their interest instead of writing us off as uptight gun-grabbing lunatics that the left paints us to be.

I didn't want to necessarily get them in trouble (even though I was annoyed). Better to let the RSO who is a qualified instructor handle it and get them back on target. They seem to have gotten a free lesson out of it.

I think what I actually said was, "Hey guys hold up your shot went wild and a piece of the bullet got me. I'm fine... I'm gonna get you some help." They looked kinda confused anyways.

Some people say "let the RSOs handle it, it's their job", others will say to do it yourself. Can't please everyone I guess.

I'm not completely sure which is worse, the new shooter or the guy next to him exhibiting Range Rage. Whenever possible I slow down and try to help the new shooters. OP try not to let it get under your skin.

Yep!!! Especially on CalGuns - whatever you do, you will always find someone who will flame you for it... There is the "MYOB" crowd (unless a safety issue, which you were faced with) and the "Don't tell the hall monitor" crowd.

In my opinion - better to let the RSO handle it... Which is what you did - good call!

I know we should be nice and helpful to newbies; but the problem is, how would the other person take it (does he/she realize that he/she is a newbie? does the person want to be schooled by another person?)...? In this situation, a guy with TWO ladies (yeah, I got called out MYOB here in CG when I warned a shooter with his girl about range policy on rapid firing, especially beside the wall).

Hence, going forward - either don't vent/broadcast it in CalGuns OR have the RSO handle it...

It sounds harsh, but this hobby doesn't discriminate on who might be on the receiving end of a newb's ignorance. Sending them home with homework is part of the "We all have things to learn."

Tell the victim with lifelong injury due to the over-enthusiasm/lack of preparation of a negligent shooter what was discussed here, and I'm sure they'd agree.

New police recruits get drilled into their heads the firearms rules until they're blue in in the face, and some still manage to f up. Even "veteran" officers aren't immune from complacency.

Op did fine. The RSO is paid to handle this. The OP is paying to shoot not train someone to shoot.

One of the defining characteristics of firearms is that negligent mistakes often come with no "do-over". Hence I reject the concept of "learn by doing" with guns. One needs to understand what is expected and acceptable before the gun is loaded.

I had a favourite place to shoot. Where I have a personal friendship with management. After being fanned one too many times by the person next to me I complained. I was told they were a cop and cops were some of the worst offenders because they won't listen to correction and are convinced they know better.

Anyway, I decided to spring for a spendy membership with monthly dues at a swanky indoor range. No regrets.

Clearly no one wants to be in these situations. And no matter what you do someone is going to find a way to find fault. Sigh.

On a positive note let me share a good range story. I noticed the guy next to me had terrible control with his plastic fantastic. After a time while reloading I feel a tap on my shoulder. And this guy explains he noticed I too was shooting a Glock (let no one classify me as a Glock lover; I recognize their qualities as a tool -- that is all) and he saw my target at the same distance as his looked very different from his and would I please try his gun. Well that was a surprise. And I gladly offered to help. His gun was fine. And after a short period standing behind him I noticed he had a classic recoil anticipation flinch. And I was happy to spend a half hour or so explaining what he was doing and ways to practice and overcome the issue. He was receptive and appreciative. And I felt good about helping.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Help those who want to be helped. Get those who don't off the range before someone gets hurt. Let them do some reading, video watching, classroom and hunter safety courses?, and plenty of dry fire practice at home. With dummy rounds. None of us should be expected to take shrapnel in the face or a discharge to the noggin to protect someone's pride.

And I say that as someone who agrees with minding one's own business. But I am not so ideologically blind that I don't realize being hit with ricochets ceases being just another's business. And had now become mine.

                              Carry on ladies and gents.
