I'm at the range a few days ago and the lane next to me had one guy and 2 ladies in it, new shooters all by the looks of it.

The guy pops the hangar at 7 yards and after a moments hesitation, proceeds to KEEP SHOOTING. He pops the hanger again and a I feel the slight sting of a bullet fragment zipping off my shoulder.

I get his attention to knock it off and I called the RSO over. IDK what happened but they took the guy into another lane and he was still there getting instruction from the RSO when I left.

I haven't popped a hangar in a LONG time. Why TF would you keep shooting at the target when it's swinging about like a carnival ride?

Looking into a private range membership is becoming more and more appealing by the day.

Everyone starts learning from zero. It's good to hear the RSO recognized that a little education would most likely be better than kicking the group from the range.

I feel your pain. I RSO at a range with public access and new gun owners showing up with the gun still in the Cabela's bag puts me on high alert. I've taken to asking them upfront to recite Cooper's 4 rules, something every gun owner should be able to recite without hesitation. If they fail, they go home.

Meanwhile, there's 30 lanes of shooters not being supervised while the RSO teaches an individual class. If I can remedy the situation in 2 minutes, I will. Otherwise, they go home with a friendly suggestion that they take a class first before coming back.

Imagine how much better the shooting world would be if basic marksmanship, safety, and proper gun handling were components of a high school education, a serious requirement to graduate. I know that's a whole different discussion (and a long one at that), but I think we lack seriously in this regard.

If the schools can still teach driver's ed and shop class, then did we why stop teaching gun safety?

Obviously, someone needs to teach kids how to properly operate dangerous equipment.
