Tip jars are stupid. Why tip a guy at the LGS for just doing his job? Do we tip an employee at the register of Home Depot? Vons? The bank?

I only tip at a sit down restaurant that has servers at my table. I really hate it where you go to a sandwich place like Jersey Mikes, swipe your card and it asks for a tip. I always hit the “no” button. Again, we don’t tip at McDonalds, so why would we tip at Jersey Mikes?

My tip for commercial business like this gun store...is my repeated business, providing good references of them to friends and forums like CG and thanking them verbally.

Tip jars on dive boats, gun stores and other similar obnoxious efforts to induce tipping usually results in annoying people.

I tip very well as a person that essentially earned his way through college on tips...but I am thoughtful as to whom I tip...

If I am uncertain of the tipping protocol, I actually do research, ask local folks or if all else fails...ask soothsayer YSR...he always has an opinion.

Tacky, and it seems to have been placed right in front of the CC machine so that it’s in the middle of the transaction. I think I would likely shove it to the side as I go to sign the receipt

I don’t shop at that range anyway though, due to their other poor choices...

Every situation is different. So after carefully evaluating each one, it's only then I decide how much not to tip.

Pretty sure it’s just an excuse to keep Captain America out on the counter.

Okay......this is funny because I had this happen to me at a place we ate in Sacramento. I actually nicknamed the guy Noodle Nazi. Over at Natomas by the Home Depot is a Mongolian bbq place. I have not been in there for ten years. But, when we would go in the guy frying up your bowl of noodles would stare at his tip jar on the counter. He would look right at you and then at his tip jar. When you went to put money in the jar he would look away so you would think he did not see you put the money in. It became my mission to find out if he did it to everyone.....so I would watch him with other customers and he would pull that stunt on 75% of them.

One day in line he did it to me again and I started telling my buddy about the Noodle Nazi looking away when I put money in there. He did not believe me so he was up next and the guy did it to him too. I figured out how to get him though. I always had a pocket full of change so I started dropping one coin in at a time over the time he was cooking my food as I stared at him.

I don't care for the big anonymous tip jars on the counter. I was at the big meat market yesterday and they had them out on the counters. The place was packed and they were kicking *** and taking names with service. I gave our butcher a tip directly and skipped the jars.

I wonder who gets the tip at that LGS ?

                          Owner?

                          Manager?

                          Employee? (which employee?)

And yes....I tip at the right time & at the right place!

It's simple.....Fold up a bill (5,10 or 20) and when you thank the person (whoever they may be) for the great service, give it to them while you're shaking their hand.

P.S...that anonymous tip jar is really "JV" IMHO.
