I refuse to respond to a question of "need". As soon as I get, "why do you need that", I immediate shut off the discussion with I have no unfulfilled needs in life, but I do have a number of unfilled "wants" the specific item in question is a want, not a need. Depending on the person asking the question, I may reply with a question of why do you need that new Lexus, Pick up truck, cruise to Alaska etc., or why do you need another purse or a new pair of shoes, etc.

Need or want? If a person wants them all then they should keep them. If the don't then they should get rid of them.

My guns are part of my Health Maintenance so I need all of them and a few more.

Just like shoes, I have some for walking, some for Hiking, some for working, some for Cycling (toe clips, flats, Looks, SPD's, Racing SPDs and Speedplays), some for Fly Fishing (pegged and not pegged), some for Hunting (Upland, Deer), some for water, some for the house (slippers and flip flops), some for XCountry skiing (skate and traditional), some for soccer (coach and ref), some for horses, some for going out, some for funerals, some for motorcycles (summer boots, winter boots), some for pouring concrete.

And yet there are idiots who would say you only need 2 pair of shoes.

I'd like to see them pour concrete or hunt in flip flops
Spreading the WORD according to COLT. and Smith, Wesson, Ruger, HK, Sig, High Standard, Browning

          Honest, serious, prudent answer:

It depends on exactly what you are trying to do; who you are, what’s your job, etc.

A Navy SEAL legitimately “needs” more than 1-2 guns.

M4, SR25, maybe a bolt gun (do secret squirrels use those or just the SR25?), that little HK auto squirt gun they like, breaching shotgun, pistol, etc.

They are literally tools....different ones for diff jobs.

Do you own a ranch / farm? You prob also “need” more than a few different types of guns.

Are you prepping for end of the world?
You prob “need” a few dozen guns to feel secure & meet your perceived need.

The next “Serious” answer is; you “need” at least a semi auto rifle, bolt gun, shotgun, pistol, and a few spares of each.

The 3rd serious answer is all of them.

Get out of here ya pansy if you don’t want and NEED ALL THE GUNS.

Don’t think I’ve ever met someone that said “damn, I wish I bought a smaller safe”!

When I have almost enough, I'll have a huge room filled with guns; not in racks, just loose on the floor six or eight feet deep. Then I'd jump in and swim through them like Scrooge McDuck swimming through his money. That'd be nearly the right number of guns, give or take a dump truck full or two.

How many guns does one need?

                Probably one.

But this is America, you don't have to "need" anything to have something.

Carl Marx, the head commie, said:
"From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" .

                SCREW THAT.

We had a big fire here in Santa Barbara a few years ago, I was in France at the time with my wife and my daughter texted me on the phone saying "Dad, I have just been told to evacuate now, and I mean right NOW. I am taking the dogs, the suitcase from the safe, what guns do you want to save, i only have the space for a few of them"

The suitcase from the safe is a small case with important papers, they all have been scanned but I like keeping the originals, also some treasured family keepsakes. I told her to take the Colt SAA, the Ruger Old Army, a 1911 didn't care which one and the '94 Winchester takedown lever.

So think like a fire evacuation, maybe that will help you decide which guns you need. Oh, house didn't burn, we were lucky.
I'm also in SB and the evacuations really helped with the decision making process!

Only 2 guns are really needed. Having a couple of tons of ammo for those 2 guns is what should be thought about.

Keep what you like, sell what you want to purchase ammo.

How many do you "need"? As many as you want... Nearly every gun I've sold I regret it. With the way things are going guns are becoming harder and harder to get. If you don't need the money keep the guns IMO.

And what's the matter with your son?

My advice, just keep what you've got. If you want more, buy more. Any time you think about selling some to thin the herd, just put it back in the safe and forget about it. If you really need money that's one thing, but selling for the sake of you think you have too many is a mistake IMO. You will most likely regret it at some point, especially considering the possibilities for the future of our country. In that case, there's no such thing as too many.

It seems that at least two answers to this question come to mind...

1.) the Minimalist - this reminds me of a joke my mother-in-law used to tell -

" if it takes a chicken and a half, a day and a half, to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle, how many hotcakes does it take to shingle a dog house?

Answer: one, if its big enough

                          one.JPG

2.) The inspirational Crazy Ivan approach (which as long as you have a strong constitution seems to work well - especially when restricted to 10 round mags)...

                          crazy Ivan.JPG

Of course, like all things in life, your mileage may vary!

(Footnote: thanks to the InterWeb for illustrating my two answers.)

In my honest opinion, just 2 ar15s and 2 pistols for rest of my life is enough. I thinned my collection already. Only kept my favorite pistols and 2 ars. My rest of money goes towards buying houses, golds, and education for my kids. No more spending money on stupid stuffs like cars. Worst investment.

My old lady says the same exact thing and I tell her, them are fighting words!

And this is my 2 cents: 2 semi-auto rifles, 1 bolt action rifle, 2 shotguns (12ga), 1 HD pistol or rifle for each room of the house including garage and 2 CCW sized pistols.

Guns are like tools, a auto mechanic cant do his job with just a screwdriver or wrench

he needs a tool box with a wide assortment of different tools for different purposes.
