Sig Sauer p226- Cleaning

Hi All,

So I got my first Sig p226. Ive been told that it should be lubed with grease. Is it vital to do this or can oil be used? I just went to local GS and got some "Winter Balm" brand gun grease. (it was all they had)

Can I continue my routine (like my other guns) with Hoppes 9 then CLP as lube...or should I use the grease for just my Sig.

Also do I just grease the rails and use CLP for everything else? The guy at the GS said use the grease everywhere...including inner slide, barrel, etc.

Almost all Sig P226 models have anodized aluminum frame. In order to preserve anodizing from wearing out, you want to use the slickest lube on rails. CLP will also work, but I would recommend going with a quality (not just what your LGS has) grease. The rest of the parts can be treated with oil.

In a freezing cold climate, they don't recommend grease in winter, but it's most likely irrelevant to your cause

FWIW, I have a good 10k rounds through my refurbished 226 having never used more than ballistol... Perhaps grease would be better, idk.

Mil-Comm TW25B is what they put a sample of in the box with a new Sig. That's not too sticky and a little goes a long way. Brownells have it.

I use Lucas Gun Oil. Lucas gun oil is what SIG recommends.

Use the grease. Lucas, TW25, or similar. Don’t use oil unless you have a steel frame Sig. But even on my steel frame guns, I use the Lucas grease.

Grease the rails and the external barrel at muzzle where it locks up into the slide. Use gun oil / CLP on internals.

i'm pretty much a Ballistol guy too for everything - i have been known to use a little grease on rails and other moving contact parts

as far back as i can remember i've never heard of anyone really damaging their firearm due to any particular oil they used

sometimes i believe we put too much emphasis on certain products - i read stories of people who in a pinch have used vaseline, butter, KY jelly

i think there are lots of lubricating compounds that will suffice

Grease the rails and the external barrel at muzzle where it locks up into the slide. Use gun oil / CLP on internals.

The above has been working since Sig introduced their pistols with the Browning name on the slides. ~1977.

I have found Weapon Shield Lithium Grease works very well on auto pistol slide rails, and I've tried just about everything at one time or another.

I lube all my slides & barrel with the same surplus Plastisol grease I use on my M1s...mainly because I bought a case of the little pots years ago. I also use it on the slides of my 1911s.I use G-96 on everything else.

I oil my 226, but I keep it cleaned and well lubed. I don't like using grease in most guns because it holds dirt and creates a grinding compound.
