can you provide links to the reticles you use. or at lest the make and model of the scopes. I'm interested to see what you are seeing.

It's a busy one. Illuminated MOAR
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.
The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.Comment

You don't really need to turn dials with that. A xmas tree would be easier at very long distance but under 500 yards you can just do holdover. At longer distance wind correction on a reticle like that can be way off. You should also be able to measure distance with that reticle.
You can just build a dope chart with never touching the turrets. Just looking at my strelok for my 6.5cm I can get out to 800 yards with under 23moa. Your 308 should stay well under 30.sigpic

Nevermind, likely to far in depth for the OP at this time.Comment

Ya, it is like a different language and he isn't even really listening. Nice reticle though, even thou I am a mil user.
OP, Same 600 yard scenario @ 400y, is over 1.5mil or 23" (27" with the 308) of horizontal uncertainly, hardly a small pie plate..
Understanding the angles and ballistics, is key in long range hunting as fieldcraft is key for your bow.Last edited by diver160651; 05-09-2019, 3:43 PM.D.I.Y. a Target Cam for ELR

Ya, the fact that AudioPhil graciously suggested doing some base work first, and that the OP said he should skip it is what prompted my response.
OP
What stops of people from transitioning to longer range hunters/shooters is often the linear on target thinking..and the never ending pie plate mentality.
That 8" pie plate that is huge at 200, is't so big at 400. The 10 mph wind that moves the bullet .5mil at 200 should easily make the pie plate, but total math is more than 2x at 400, because the target effectively 2X smaller, while the wind goes to 2x larger, to 1mil..
What is really glaring form your posts and responses is that you did not get or retain, the very basic information from the classroom that is needed make quick work of the field part. That is probably why you felt it was too noisy on the line to learn... The line is were you go to validate the classroom..Last edited by diver160651; 05-09-2019, 4:31 PM.D.I.Y. a Target Cam for ELR

there is no difference in sfp vs ffp for a reticle as far as I know. reticles are etched glass so they are a constant. turrets just move a reticle which defeats the purpose of a speedy drop reticle like the moar. if you are thinking range finding with sfp vs ffp that is a different chapter and a different part of the scope.sigpic

How does the wind thing work? You have to guesstimate and enter it or there actually a gadget you can plug into your phone?
This is a screen shot for the Hornady 150SST ammo using Hornady's ballistic app on my phone.
As you can see for 500 yards, your come up (or dialing amount) is 9.72 MOA, so you would simply dial to the 9.75 on your turret (assuming your scope is in 1/4 MOA clicks) Having a good solver, range finder, and the correct info in the solver, makes a lot of this much easier.Comment

Drops?
They all fall away if using the reticle in SFP on an un-validated zoom ratio or if using your zoom while on glass like hunting or competing in positional and field type matches.Last edited by diver160651; 05-09-2019, 4:44 PM.D.I.Y. a Target Cam for ELR

I do know stuff
Learning to read the wind takes time and experience...and far more practice than I have time for. There are some tools but ya still gotta put in the trigger time to make sense of the data in actual aiming.
Did okay after the Appleseed Project course.

I have shot guns all my life and am a decent shot. Here's a target that shows me sighting in the .308 with a P.O.S. EOTech sight when I first bought it. Got a steady creep to zero. I replaced it with a Trijicon 1X8 AccuPower scope.

The NF scope is just more complicated. Went to the casino range a few times...too loud for me. Need a quiet place to familiarize myself with and effectively adjust the new glass. If I am unsure I can make a shot in the field...the weapon I'm holding doesn't matter, I'm not shooting. That's true with a recurve, compound bow, rifle or pistol. I will just get closer and try not to get busted. But some places require longer shots so I invested in better glass and had no idea with would challenge me so much. Live & learn eh?
NorCalFocus, you hit the nail on the head. I still think in inches and that's clearly a big part of my problem. Wrapping my head MOA sounds easier than it is when you're my age. I have not even accepted metrics yet. LOLLast edited by BC9696; 05-09-2019, 5:24 PM.Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. nightforce is pretty good at zoom consistency. 22x ranging power takes almost no brain power to ratio down to 11x. ranging through the whole zoom range is above my brain power so i just do easy fractions.
nothing falls away. you just have to think more with a sfp scope.
still no turret spinning needed if the reticle is designed to drop and wind hold. i only touch my turrets when im well past 1200 yards. hold over gets sloppy away from the crosshairs since i dont have a bubble level.sigpic

The rifles
Dumped the EOTech w/ Magnifier...

...for the Trijicon 1X8 AccuPower.
The Model 700 winmag got the NF. Dumped the 3X9 Nikon on the .300WM for a NightForce 4-14X56...huge difference!
