    Need a coach

I've taken the long range shooting course at Front Sight in Nevada. I've tried to learn how to use a turret at shooting ranges but the noise is not helpful. So now I am looking for someone proficient using these tactical scopes to go somewhere quiet (desert) and teach me how to dope my scope for 300-600 yards. Put decent glass on two rifles but struggling to use them. Hoping to find somebody with some free time (maybe retired ex-military) to help me dial in my rifles and develop some confidence in my shooting at longer ranges. As I understand it, my .300WM & .308 can shoot past 600 yards effectively but the "influences" of LR shooting inside of 600 yards are considerably less. If I can hit paper & steel at 600 yards then I would feel more comfortable shoot game at up to 300-400 yards. That's my goal. Anyone wanna be my coach? I have the shooting table and everything else. Need somebody comfortable with bolt & semi-auto rifles. I begin a 6 week vacation on May 22. Can anyone help me out? I'm in south OC.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

I'd love to help but I'm a bit far from you. There are some good instructional videos on the NSSF site that might help. They cover mil/mil as well as MOA. In reality, the same principles apply to both, just the math changes. Best of luck to you.

    Safe shooting and tight groups,

I have a private range for this sort of thing that can get you out to 2000 yards. I'm outside Phoenix and shooting after 11am will start to get uncomfortable.

I helped my son get sub moa at 1250 yards when he was 11.

300 to 600 yards is M1 Garand iron sight 1940s effective range.

Just keep shooting, man! You'll get there. If people asked for a coach when times got tough; the pilgrims would have never made it off the Mayflower.....Columbus would have only found spices.....we would be speaking with British accents.

Pick one rifle for now, and roll with it. Don't switch back and forth. Master one, before moving on to another.

There is a lot to be said for getting out there and start practicing & competing.

Perhaps I was unclear. When you switch from a typical hunting (BDC) scope to a tactical scope with a turret, it's a whole new ballgame and an intimidating one at that. Two focal planes, ZeroStop and other things that are completely foreign (and profoundly benefit the shooter once he has mastered em). But before they are a benefit they are a handicap. This is the practical application I am struggling with and have been unable to resolve via shooting and shouting at a gun range. I need a quiet place where I can learn how to effectively use the turret. Two focal planes is different and "practicing" doesn't help much if you keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over. gets expensive too. Heck, I'd rather pay someone for their time to learn how to use these things than burn money on on ammo missing targets. But I'm not up for another busy public rifle range session, that was quite frustrating. And I do get out to AZ frequently...mostly Kingman to Flag but could swing south for some coaching. I have been driving to the range in LA on Lil Tujunga Canyon Rd. But again, a crowded range is NOT what I need. Oh and I did take a two day rifle shooting course from some organization whose name I cannot recall...they taught a lot of Revolutionary war history and had us shooting at targets like the military guys use. My old eyes need good glass and magnification now, iron sights are not gonna cut it anymore.

Glass puts the target and sight in the same plane. And that makes shooting a bit easier sometimes. Good Luck.

I did not ask to be paid. I just like going out and spotting. Once it gets hot then I need to get paid. Otherwise, cover my gas and some sammys and water.

Seriously, noise and other shooters in the area can be annoying for stuff that needs a calm environment.

If you can send me all the specs on your gun I can build up a drop chart and then we can work on a dope chart.

It would probably be a 2 day event.
Day 1. I confirm scope is properly mounted at my house. Then go to Ben Avery to confirm zero at 100 yards.
Day 2. We head out at 6am and work you from 200 yards to as far as you want.

Plenty of nice hotels in the area but this one is where most of the MLB players stay

Not sure what the turret issue is. I had a problem with just knowing which direction to turn them and I was always wrong. I had to make arrows on my dope chart to show me which way to turn the turrets. Never had to look at them again. Just count my clicks back and forth and turn the turrets while looking at my paper. You can figure that out by aiming at a wall with a white paper with a large crosshair on it. Move the turret 2 or 3 rotations and see if it went up/down left/right and write that down on your dope sheet.

We could sit at that rifle for 3 hours and put only 10 rounds through it. It does not take much ammo if the guns is set up right and the drop chart is right.

That's fine if you know what you are doing, but practicing the wrong thing won't really get you anywhere no matter how much you practice.
Seeking out someone to correct your deficiencies will though.
