It's extremely common and sensible to do when running around from one target to another in matches, and in open-air match practice/simulation.

It's a little bit unusual to do that from a common shooting bay at a public range and not something I would do. I prefer to do that in match simulation... but I guess that works for him and as long as he has good safety practice, why not.

i've been shooting long enough to know when i have shot 10+ rounds.
      i don't have to count.
if i am close to empty and have time, i'm swapping mags.

also, as a bonafide itg and couch bandit, every shot i take is a lethal head shot, so i don't need to empty mags into the bad guys.

The concept taught was if you put yourself in the situation where you plan on shoot to slide lock, you have failed. The last round is used for the unexpected threat that may come up. So of course, if there is an immediate threat, you shoot you don't stop to reload.

In a fight, if you are moving and shooting, you should be moving towards your next concealment and should not shoot to slide lock. You will never know what you may find behind that concealment. Reloading only happens when bullets are not flying towards you.

Other post has shown that stopping to reload an empty gun in the open will give your opponent opportunity to rush you.

Again it was what was taught in a combat handgun class. Part of the training to practice the combat mindset for what ever its worth.

you enter one room, engage in a firefight and shoot several bad guys, leaving at least one round in your 15 round clip and one in the chamber.

do you continue into the next room, and another possible firefight, with one round in your magazine, or do you drop the mag and put in a freshie before you proceed?
Hahaha, easy...I don't continue into the next room.....I'm backing the F outta there, I'm not swat.

Well first off during a firefight I would let the partial mag drop to the ground not waste time and thought retaining it.

As to the second part I would reload while I still had one in the pipe even during an active shootout because

                1. it's faster
                2. I never have an empty gun
                3. That is how I train.

In addition during a firefight i wouldn't rely on round counting other then in a general sense. I would switch to a full mag every chance I got.

I believe it mas Marcus Luttrell who said “ You count your rounds during a firefight so that way your brain isn’t focusing on the fact that you’re killing people.”

I think i was mildly aware of this concept, but I appreciate this more in-depth discussion.

Definitely going to consider adjusting my training with my CCW piece, my new carbine and my main home defense, bedside pistol (9mm Shield, Ruger PCC and XD9, respectively)

easier for you to say, you only have to count to 9

How many spare mags does the average person carry? One or two at most? Ditching 3-4 rounds on the floor eliminates a fairly large amount of your firepower.
                            I carry 3.

What do you plan to top off with???

Do you carry loose rounds in your pocket?? I'd rather carry an extra mag.

Getting shot while your playing don't drop the mag or trying to move rounds around between mags isn't a great idea either.

But feel free to do it your own way.

                            I told you mine.

Instead of counting rounds, perhaps mentally repeating "front sight, press" might be a better use of stress overwhelmed brainpower?

Your finger should be indexed along the slide, and you need to have the safety engaged or the double-action gun de-cocked before messing with the magazine.
I agree with the statement in bold. The finger should be out of the trigger guard.

The rest is nonsense, as the gun will not go off as long as the trigger finger is out of the trigger guard. I have yet to have any reputable instructor (even at Front Sight) advocate it. You are adding precious seconds to the process.
