It's been happening guys. "Special" Agents from the DOJ show up, state it's a compliance check. They state if you don't allow them to see your rifle they will return with a warrant and you could be arrested. There are people who, at the time of this visit actually trusted LEO's and were willing to show the rifle because "they knew they had done nothing wrong" and wanted end the matter, only to have the rifle seized.
Now whether what the OP said is what's currently going on, only he knows the answer.
As a reminder, the Calif, Pistol & RIfle Assc has a flyer that can be given to them if they show up at your door. I believe it's also located on a thread here at Calguns.Comment

4th amendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

We know of the handful of instances from 4+ months ago, but those weren't "compliance checks", they were visits because people tried to register things they weren't supposed to (or that at least appeared that way). And that hasn't even happened in a reported 4 months. Only one arrest came out of that, and it was because the guy allegedly also had a bunch of other assault weapons he didn't try to register and a few suppressors. It's been happening guys. OP doesn't even "know" if this is happening, he heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy.Last edited by CandG; 08-04-2018, 10:29 AM.Comment

Sounds like The Daily Shooter got a little carried away....I posted a comment response to his video.
You can tell he's quite flustered throughout the video. Maybe he read the OP's post and felt he needed to make his subscribers aware before actually validating the information.Comment

Prohibited Persons
I think all this has to do with California stepping up their efforts to go after Prohibited Persons who had legally purchased firearms in the past, who have since been convicted of Felonies, gotten a restraining order, etc.
But to be honest, I would not put anything past the California DOJ.Comment

Totally different in the eyes of the law to plain view search vs. search inside someone's residence without permission or a warrant.I answered your question and gave examples of police using warrantless search twice over. What you choose to gloss over is up to you. Sure it can be FUD but Ive been to the range where the cops show up and start looking at mags and rifles. Wont be to far off to believe at order was given to search a few homes in that state. I actually hope its not FUD so people can see how far off the cliff Cali is going.
There is no expectation of privacy under the 4th amendment in public. Whereas, there is in one's home. You are comparing apples to oranges."Far and away the best prize life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." - Theodore Roosevelt
