I heard a gun shop employee tell a customer that the minute he registered his AR with the state, he could take off the Bullet Button.

This may be true with a initial contact. How many times has there been a arrest or confiscation, only to have a DA fail to prosecute because no law was broken? Or a defendant found not guilty because officials did not understand the law? Or prosecuted just to be dicks? Yada, yada, yada.

Technically there is nothing in the law that says you can't. It's the DOJ regs that say you can't. DOJ doesn't make law so you wouldn't be breaking any laws if you did.

True, My SKS that was bought new in 1996 has no lug but lots of cosmoline.

              I've heard:

Don't use handloaded ammo for defensive use because it'll be used against you in court.
Don't modify defensive guns otherwise it'll be used against you in court.
Shotguns are the ultimate home defense gun.
              A woman's first/only gun should be a snubnose revolver.

And what's wrong with the shotgun being the ultimate home defense. You're not looking to shoot long distances; within the reach from a room nothing is more devastating than a shotgun. (unless you're a Glock fanboy)

An employee at my local shop told me pre 1899 antiques have to be registered.

Personal preference comes in somewhere. Other weapons have their advantages too. Shotguns recoil a lot, are slow to reload, and (in my opinion) are generally harder to shoot than carbines.

A gun shop employee in California said he had never heard of Calguns.net.

( Actually, that one makes sense. )

What is wrong with the first three statments?

Seriously! The first two WILL and can be an issue in court. Ask any cop who has used his pistol in a shoot situation. The lawyers WILL use modifications against you somehow.

Shotguns are the premiere weapon to use in the home for self defense and safety reasons (wall penetration)

Just my opinion, I think that if it goes that far to court, you have more to worry about than mods.
And there are different types of rifle ammo designed for home defense with lower penetration. There are other options besides the shotgun...

You have your point. But what Carbine would you shoot? Pistols are great in a hurry, but again, no match for a shotgun.

As for the length of the shotgun, a 5-6 rounder would be nice - I have a 9 rounder mossy 500, which seems has it's pros/cons: Pros - holds plenty of shells (9 isn't bad, considering we can't own anything with over 10 in CA). Has a natural point of aim when shouldered, or otherwise. Cons - length ~ for which I'm looking for better stock options.

                                Not illegal.

California's AW laws do not include a "constructive possession" component.
