Try the new S & W Model 66.

I also have a pre-lock 686+ 4" and it's hard to say which one I prefer although the Model 66 has "quicker" handling than the 686.

I have a Ruger SP101 with a 2" barrel. Thing is solid and shooting 357 out of it is not unpleasant. It's my favorite gun to shoot.

I have a 2" and 3" sp101 and I agree, much softer shooter than my smith 4".

I believe it has to do with less muzzle velocity and more wasted powder outside (long) of the barrel.

The same is the case with my .454 alaskan and my 7.5" SRH

Smith & Wesson 686P. 7 shots. Available in 2.5", 3", and 4.125" barrel lengths (as well as longer).

The 3" seems to be damned hard to find.

It's called "aerodynamics" and it's the science of making things go fast without burning a barrel of gasoline per mile, among other things. It took the American car industry two and a half decades after the first Citroen DS was built to catch up with it with the concept that air is actually a fluid that tries to slow down square shaped objects moving through it. Like the boxy American muscle cars of the 60's through 80's that needed 8 cylinder engines to reach 125-130 mph top speed. While the 5-seater SM was doing 140 mph all day long with a 6 cylinder engine.

But that pistol - no way. No how.

I'm old enough to remember the when the M16 came out... all smartarses were like "it's black and ugly" and "oh its plastic, where is the wood" and "this little pea shooter wont kill anyone" and "that's a Mattel rifle" and "nobody is going to buy that thing, it's hideous".

This right here, I love mine. .38 special is tame and .357 is easily managable. I got the adjustable rear sight version and couldn't be happier.

Chiapas Rhino 20DS
The Rhino fires from the lowermost chamber of the cylinder, rather than firing from the topmost chamber. That drastically reduces muzzle flip and perceived recoil which feels more like a gentle push straight back. Without any exageration firing a .357 Mag round feels like a .38 Spl, and firing a .38 Spl feels like firing a .22 Mag.
It is the most forgiving Magnum revolver ever made, period. Whoever says otherwise it's either lying or it didn't tried firing one.

They are interesting, but I didn't like the grip angle at all.
