LAPD officers may purchase the Benelli M4 Shotgun. Since Benelli shotguns don't come into the states with the mag extension the officers can either find a factory extension (hard to do and expensive) the only non Benelli authorized extension is from Daves Metal Works. His safety and bolt handle are also gtg for LAPD.

LAPD can also buy their own AR with some restrictions on them. They can take them home and they aren't using a BB.

I'm not sure of the restrictions placed on the rifles but they are training the rank and file three or four days a week at a So Cal shooting range for rifle quals.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

My ex-classmate is a current LAPD officer (Pacific Division) and carries a Glock 21 on duty and and S&W model 60 Chief's Special off duty. When he first joined the force in the mid 80's, he was issued a S&W model 67 38 special.

Walked by a cop's car at Moonlight a few weeks ago and saw a what looked to be a AR-15 or some variant and a shot gun. Pretty cool...

Here is a picture of the 67...I believe they came double action only, also the 15-3's were reworked (different hammer mech) into the double action mode only, in the middle 70's.

The 60 is a 5 shot Good for backup

I believe it was a good thing to go to DA myself...

I remember some officers here in Downey carrying HK squeezecockers as duty weapons. Seems like the few I see now carry USP's.
You're right about the LASO. Sheriff Block purchased a truck load of 9mm BERETTA pistols around 1995. Then he sold a bunch of his Smith & Wesson revolvers to gun stores outside of the immediate Los Angeles region. You didn't hear about it on your local newscasts; but gun stores were running radio ads for those used LASO revolvers in the Salinas area. A few were purchased by some deputies as souvenirs; but most found their way to the used handgun market...

All the revolvers carried by LAPD were neutered (Double action only)
