That is a legitimately great question, personally I have had my scar 17 for almost four years and it is by far my favorite rifle. But I would love an m4 I have a pair of benellis currently (sport ii and ethos) and they have been absolutely flawless and a pleasure to shoot, clean and just own in general. I was always looking for a H20 version of the M4 just could never justify the extra cost compared to the traditional black one.

For me it comes down to the purpose. For strictly recreational shooting I freaking love my benellis but sporting clays is my jam. An m4 wouldn't be a sporting clays gun so would it still classify as as much fun as my sporting clays guns probably not. But for Home defense/tactical training it would be amazing and of course it would be a solid option in the zombie apocalypse/ SHTF.

But if you perfer rifle shooting more than shotgun shooting the scar is the best rifle on the planet, period.(my opinion) I can't say enough good things about my scar 17 and anybody who tries it is extremely impressed afterwards. Ammo for the scar will be more expensive also and it was easy for me to question the scars validity when in California but now that I'm in Texas I love this gun so much more, side folding stock, 20 round mags and a suppressor. This thing is great.

My vote is buy both, both are amazing and both fill separate roles. Also both because you can, Murica!!!

To OP, if you need a 12 gauge the M4 gets my vote. Heck I have an M1, M3, along with an M4 so these are the baselines I have had experiences with.

I'd suggest picking the platform that will serve your purposes most - HD, range toy, zombie apocalypse?

I'm leaning towards the benelli as the scar 17 will have the cool factor and probably better reliability over my aero precision m5 but that's about it. I'm sure my m5 is more ergonomic with the rail I have and no grip fin and Geissele trigger. Hopetonbrown's comment on shooting his 870 more than his m4 has me thinking maybe I'm just not a shotgun guy since I don't even bother loading the 870 in my car most days. I grab my 6920 and call it good. Guess it would be best to shoot one before dropping all that money.

You can't go wrong with either.

You could buy two M4s for the price of the scar though....or an m4 and a couple of ARs.,..

We are no longer repairing the Mossberg's or Remington's at this point after determining how much is spent on repairing them, ordering new*parts*and it's just not worth the cost of repairing when new*shotguns*can be purchased at a cheaper price. We used to demil the*shotguns*and destroy them but I convinced my wife to let the staff purchase them for $25 as "tinker" specials because the know how to fix them and they can do it on their own dime at their convenience.*

As for the Benelli, that is the longest working*shotgun*in our inventory. It has been on the line since day one and after inspecting the records, it actually did suffer one*parts*breakage. The part that broke was the*rear sight*and not related to any shooting or over-use (staff member dropped it). It may not be used quite as often as the pump-action*shotguns*but it goes on the line daily and there are plenty of people who want to shoot it thanks to all the video games that it's featured in. We've used 00-buck, "light*recoil" buck, birdshot and frangible buckshot and it eats anything that we give it and never fails to cycle. The Marine RSO's all have prior experience with Benelli M4 and really love it and the fact that it continues to work and work always leads them to boast about how well the Marine's choose their weapons.*

To be fair he also said the SCAR was also the most reliable rifle on the range too.

To answer your question Blood_Donor, I would say the most reliable "alternative" is the FN SCAR. That weapon has yet to break or wear out a bolt, brake a hammer, or any other major part. IIRC, we've only lost a charging handle and hammer spring. A stock was broken due to being dropped by staff and our SCAR-L has had three new barrels installed. The SCAR-L has been on the line since day one (it was used prior to that as well) and we opened on 01 OCT 13.

Has been on the legislative hit list for almost 20 years. Semi-automatic shotguns with both a pistol grip and a collapsing or folding stock are banned. That means the M1014 version of the Benelli M4. So be careful how you configure your Benelli M4 in California; you could easily commit a felony.

BTW, there is no hyphen in "Benelli M4" or US military designations like "M1" or "M16A1." There is a hyphen in "AK-47" and "AR-15."

You're right
The M1014 with collapsible stock is taboo however the fixed stock M4 is not banned (yet) nor is it listed on any pending legislation (yet).
And you are right about the dangers of changing the configuration of the M4.

This is my favorite rifle and just set up my second one with a NF NXS 3.5-15 x 50 on the way. Got it BNIB off an FN forum member for $2850. He shipped the upper less the bolt to my FFL and the bolt, lower and stock assembly to my house where I made them CA compliant at my leisure. The M4 is still on my short list so I guess I'll eventually have both.
