Seriously though. I'm not saying that an M4 isn't a good choice. But the 870 can do everything that the M4 can do aside from being a pump action. As far as beating you to death with slugs and 00buck, I would want to do a side by side comparison.Originally posted by FjoldI've been married so long that I don't even look both ways when I cross the street.Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.

Broadly speaking, the 870 is the standard pump action in US law enforcement arsenals. If you want to argue about why, I'd say it's down to fashion as much as anything else: cops tend to favor what other cops are using. Before the 870 it was the Ithaca 37, which the 870 resembles in many ways.Reminton 870 Users:
U.S. Border Patrol
U.S. Department of Education
U.S. Military (designated M870)
U.S. Secret Service
Internal Revenue Service
Federal Bureau of Investigation (including SWAT and HRT)
United States Marshals Service
Various police forces such as:
• California Highway Patrol (since 1965)
• Los Angeles Police Department
• Sparta, New Jersey
• Alaska Department of Corrections
• Pennsylvania State Police
• Texas Department of Criminal Justice
• Virginia State Police
• Indiana State Police
However, the US military is overwhelmingly equipped with Mossberg 590s and 500s. In this case it's mostly because of cost (lowest bidder), but there is a legend that when the Navy (or some other branch) asked for bids for a shotgun, Remington refused or forgot to submit a bid. Might even be true, I have no idea.
For some reason, when US law enforcement agencies started moving to semi-automatics, instead of selecting Remington 1100s or 11-87s, they chose Benelli M1s. Again, the reason why is obscure and probably disappointing to gear nerds (based on what I know about the Benelli USA LE sales force, I suspect those guys had a lot more to do with it than the shotguns themselves).
About 15 or 20 years ago, when the Pentagon was looking for a semi-automatic shotgun, they tested the Benelli M1 that was becoming so popular with US law enforcement. Again, the legend is that some officers involved in the procurement decision didn't trust the M1's inertia action, so the M4 was developed as an answer to the desire for a more familiar gas-operated system. Who knows whether that's true, but in any case the M4 was adopted as the Joint Service Combat Shotgun.
It's only in recent years that we have been seeing some LE agencies begin to tentatively adopt the M4, mostly because it is so expensive. I gather a lot of officers and deputies prefer shooting the M4, too, since the M2 (the successor to the M1) has a very nasty felt recoil.
Once again, I personally, have broken most shotgun platforms while shooting them, though I have not yet managed to break an 870. But I probably will, eventually.Originally posted by cockedandglockedGetting called a DOJ shill has become a rite of passage around here. I've certainly been called that more than once - I've even seen Kes get called that. I haven't seen Red-O get called that yet, which is very suspicious to me, and means he's probably a DOJ shill.Comment

Ok, gun that works and when it breaks you by a new one cause its cheap and works. I didn't say it didn't work or no one uses it. I said they replaced it with something better that cost more. I mean DAMN you all act like I shot down the gun. JeezThe liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.

I shot all three, Mossberg, Rem, M4 and I have to say the m4 kicked the worse but it felt solid. I shot rather older Moss and Rems when we where doing the shotgun courses in Oki. That rattled something fierce and the slide on the 500 broke right off. The armory just bought a new one cause it was cheaper and easier to fix but back on topic.Originally posted by HopetonBrownI have an 870 Police and a Benelli M4. I've taken each one to a separate 2 day shotgun class.
My 870 gets shot way more often.
There is no SCAR 17 in California. Only a bastardized, neutered shell of a rifle that calls itself a SCAR 17.
Take your Winchester pump and the money you were gonna spend on a SCAR 17 and bring them to Scott Reitz at ITTS in Los Angeles.

Physically remove parts from your attacker.
Usually a nine-count means 00, which is .33 across. In the balance between pellet swarm and individual pellet size, I like #1 buck. More pellets and it's .30, which is a nice number for old gun nuts.
As to the question at hand, I'd go with the Benelli, although personally I'd rether have one of those M1 LEO trade-ins that Classic had, now out of stock.I meant, it is my opinion that...

I'm just not a SCAR fan. They're great guns, but they just don't do much for me. And I own a m4. They are chock full of awesome! And hell, you could damn near buy a m4 AND a m2 for the price of a SCAR 17.Last edited by L84CABO; 06-08-2017, 11:33 PM."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

The only reason someone hates a SCAR is because they can't afford one... Haters gonna hate, hate, hate 🤣
