A most excellent and concise book on this topic is The Law of Self Defense by Andrew Branca. Every gun owner should have a copy. He covers the legal elements of self defense that your self defense shooting incident will be evaluated by the District Attorney. He also covers the peculiarities of each states laws.

It's the best book I've read on the topic and the author brakes it down nicely into useful guidelines for the gun owner.
