Currently employed LEO's do have the ability to lawfully "go down to the local gun store and buy themselves an AW" with the provision that they must supply a departmental letter authorizing the purchase.
There is no requirement that the weapon be acquired from their department. There is no requirement that the weapon only be used on duty.
AW's so acquired can still be registered under the 1989 AW registration process.
The Attorney General has additionally issued an opinion that weapons so acquired must be surrendered at the end of their LE service.
