OP is in LA/SGV. "Halfway" would be Tulare/Visalia.. 200 miles one-way, so 400 for the seller, 800 for OP.

Even in my Corolla that would be $75 just in gas, not to mention two 7-hour days on the road.

I'll drive 100 miles each way (twice) for a PPT, but not 200.

OTOH, with the Raptor being a $1400 gun, $70 for gas is still half what the sales tax would cost.

Well spoke to Aces and they said $25 background, $25 transfer fee, bring my own lock with receipt, and 8.75 tax it's also their judgement call on what's a fair price for the gun so my total cost otd would be 1231. Could I eventually find a local selling this for 1100? Possibily but even then it would have to be wherever the seller wants to meet where a transfer could cost double than at Aces

That sounds like a good deal.

I am curious why the seller is letting it go so cheaply AND covering shipping though... To me that is a red flag.

There was someone earlier this week selling the same gun for 1000. I read his previous feedback and all have been Positive gun sales to others here. But I feel comfortable with the usps money order as payment.

That's a really nice gun to let it go for that price.

I went with VZ "Ragnar" grips and replaced the plastic MSH with a Kimber stainless MSH/Magwell

I love the Raptor grips, but they are not available from Kimber, so if they get messed up, they're done.
Mine are in a zip-loc in the original case.

If you meet local you only have the $35 ppt fee mandated by law. You'd save $100 and a ton of risk. You can pay up to 1200 local and still come out even $ wise and WAY ahead risk wise. I'd hold out for another gunnwithin driving distance...

I see what you're saying but I'd have to stay glued to that forum to get a first crack at a kimber for this price. I just so happened to be there at the right time when the post went up. He said I can pay thru paypal using my cc so if anything were to go wrong and i didnt receive my item i could dispute it with the bank. sent me a photo of his DL as well so knowing all this would you personally feel better about the risk being minimized?

You also better make sure it arrives to your FFL in the original roster configuration. Meaning that aftermarket backstrap wont fly. It is not on roster if it is not in the exact configuration that was accepted for the roster.

I know most FFLs will not accepted modified handguns as on-roster transfers. More than a few guys have found this out the hard way. Make sure your FFL is either oblivious, or on board with the specific handgun and configuration in question before any money is sent or guns shipped.

Not saying the seller isn't trustworthy, I'm sure he's a great guy and not my concern. It's just the shipping/potential loss/potential refusal for altered configuration/can't inspect parts that would worry me. People ship guns all day every day so I'm sure it'll be fine, just makes me nervous that's why I've never made any purchases that involved shipping. Keep my fingers crossed for you, I'm sure all will work out for you.

That means it is no longer the roster gun. So your FFL will either be (or claim to be) oblivious or will send it back. If it was me buying, I'd make sure it arrived in the roster config, and looked exactly like the pics the receiving FFL would find on the factory website if they decided to look - or I would not try a roster transfer.
