    Safe Light Idea

For all newbies like me. It is dark in my safe so I google and youtube around to find the easiest and simplest thing to do to "shed some light" in my safe and this is what I end up with. The project isn't completed but it is functional.

    Parts:
    1. LED: LEDMO 5630 300pcs Waterproof IP65 5m Daylight It is brighter than the 5550 and 3528 and It is daylight which is on the brighter end of the spectrum.

    2. CONNECTOR: LED Strip Connectors

    3. T CONNECTOR: LightingWill T Shape Solderless Snap Down 2 Conductors LED Strip Connector for Quick Splitter Connection of 10mm Wide 5050 5630 Single Color Flex LED Strips

    4. MOTION SENSOR: Kang Automatic Mini DC 5V-24V PIR Body Infrared Motion Sensor Switch 5A

    5. POWER SUPPLY: Power Supply

    Installations:
The LED is water proof and has water proof gel coat which doesn't fit the connector that I bought. I found this out after the fact that I should have gotten the water proof connector type. I had to use xacto blade to slice the coating off to fit the already bought connector. I also end up cutting wires off of old PC fan and switch connectors and solder the wire onto the connectors myself instead of buying new wires or buy this already made connectors to save a few bucks. It is necessary because the T connectors do not work well when you have to bend the LED. The connection becomes unstable. I also save on the soldering iron that I have since my college year. The power supply gets really warm and I wonder if it will get any hotter and cause any problem. Additional testing will tell.

The LED strip is pin to the firewall with thumb pins to make it easily replaceable instead of using more appropriate fastener but I used this thumb pin technique to hold up cables on dry wall in the apartments to reduce visible damage. It isn't pretty but it works well enough.

The motion sensor helps turn the LED on automatically but this model is suppose to continuously detect the motion and turn off after 5 seconds of inactivities. In practice, depending on where you place it, I placed it lower where it can't see my arms movement so it kept turning off. I order motion sensor with timer to see if it will work better or not.

The over preparation and installation took about 4 to 6 hours since I work slow. My safe doesn't come with a power but there is a small holes in the back that you can use any drill bit to go thru the internal firewall. An old PC power cord can be recycle for this purpose quite easy.

I hope my experience give a quick guide onto how to quickly go about lighting up your safe.

I was thinking of it as well but I have personal dislike of replacing battery (that's just me though). Nothing against the usage itself. And I something a little fancy in my "man cave"

There's a guy on here who sells an inexpensive lighting kit with battery pack and motion sensor, it's very good.

        Found link: http://www.maxmysafe.com/
He's still active here and a good guy, gti_20ae https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/member.php?u=39080

Get the large kit with battery pack and motion sensor.

GREAT system! I am REALLY pleased with my set I got from him. I also went with the large kit with the battery pack, but I went the switch route. Pictures of my safe are in that post

I have something very similar to this that I picked up at a gun show a few years ago. Once I got the door switch attached to the safe so it wouldn't fall off, the whole thing worked out quite well. Lots of light and the batteries last for quite a long time.

For the OP, ditch the duct tape and push pins in your safe and buy a role of Velcro with the sticky back. You can buy rols of either side or rolls of both together. It'll latch onto the fabric in the safe and your good to go (it's also good to have Velcro around just because. A million little uses).

My motion dector was DOA I bought a different kind no amazon.

To keep my light from falling off I used nickel colored aluminum flooring strips the flat ones from Home Depot I tacked them into the sheet rock then stuck the LEDs to it looks really clean .

Yea, really overkill, but if you like to tinker and are happy with your end product, good for you. I found something like these at Costco a few years ago. Open the safe, and they turn on.

I have the maxmysafe kit. (vendor here, paid pretty much what the OP paid if you add up the stuff he got, but much cleaner looking) Got it at the costa mesa gunshow and they gave me an extra plug and play strip of LED to extend it and make it even longer for larger safes etc for free for being a calguns member.

The kit is crazy bright. It gives you the option to either use a battery pack, or plug it in to an outlet if your safe has power plug. Easy to set up. and the LED strips have velcro backing installed and stuck to the cotton walls in my safe so it took me a min to set it up.

I use these for $15 (when on sale) at Sam's Club.

It's great because you can change the colors depending on your preference - like red to maintain your night vision.

I also like that it doesn't come on automatically. You never know when you might not want the lights to come on.
