These people aren't stupid. The only purpose of gun control laws, passed or proposed, is to pander to the constituencies of the legislators who draft them and vote for them. That's it. They know gun controls don't have any effect on crime.

The best thing about proposing gun control laws as a opposition politician who knows it won't go anywhere is you and your partisans don't actually have to vote on them. That could be problematic for Democratic Senators from some states (like Nevada, for example; Harry Reid was a pretty good friend of the NRA for most of his Senate career).

If Schumer really gave a **** about 80% receivers, he would have introduced the bill when his party had a majority in the Senate.

        Absolutely agree.

The question is whether his calculation is correct. My guess is that the stats on gun control pushed by the gun control groups are as inaccurate as their prediction of the last presidential election - there is a cultural shift which is both pro-gun and against answering poll questions.

This video is not gun-related, but it explores a little bit the issue you just brought up. This guy is a British liberal who was unhappy about the Brexit and Trump votes, but blames his fellow liberals for what happened. He's extremely perceptive (and funny, and NSFW because of language because, as I said, he's British):

The important point he makes here is how the Left has already won the Culture Wars, so ordinary people are made to feel ashamed and afraid to tell pollsters what they really think. Which is why all the polls were wrong last year.

            Chuck Schumer

Going after 80% lowers is mean spirited (insert fake tears)
"While it may come as a surprise to the authors of the legislation, most semi-automatic pistols do in fact come with a pistol grip"
Malthusianism is the idea that population growth is potentially exponential while the growth of the food supply is arithmetical at best.

And what is the left doing now? They're tripling down! Insults and shaming didn't work anymore, so they're going straight to threats and outright violence. They are physically go to prevent the expression of any contrary opinions. They want to total control of the language and the narrative.

Sorry folks.....I don't care what your point is.....if you hafta force it on me by means of violence....I'm not going to listen......ever!

80% is a marketing term with no legal meaning. Some companies even sell the same configurations as 95% receivers which is probably more accurate - the rest of the work involves things like the magazine well which is a PITA using drills and end mills.

As far as BATF is concerned, either it's "readily converted" to a firearm or it isn't.

A dimpled fire control hole or cut in the fire control pocket is where they draw the line.

In practice, it doesn't matter. If you can mill and drill an "80%" lower you can start from a 0% lump of metal although that takes a lot more time and the tooling is much more expensive.

I think a lot of people have the same problem I had with the right to bear arms. Before I took lessons, started practicing, and met you guys here, I just took "anti" as part of a political package. Women want reproductive rights. Non-Christians want the same rights as Christians. Descendants of immigrants (which is all of us unless you're Native American) don't want their heritage demonized. The pro-2A party and those who vote for them are not attractive to that crowd, so by default they end up anti-2A.

So yeah... now I'm a leftist mole inside the pro-2A crowd and vice versa. My friends are almost all leftist. In my conversations with them since I started shooting, I learned that MANY of them also are curious about guns and even ask to be taken to a range as long as they don't have to deal with people crapping all over their core beliefs. When they hear how asinine magazine limits and microstamping are, they shake their heads at the same politicians for whom they voted.

What they (we) need are politicians who can be pro-2A without the Republican platform of big-business, big-church.

Tell your liberal friends to think of "gun use for self defense" rights like abortion rights: Only when necessary, legal, safe, and rare. If you ban guns, it will just lead to people having illegal, unsafe guns in the hands of people who never get to practice and train in a safe environment. If you ban abortions, it will just lead to people having illegal, unsafe abortions performed by people who never got to practice and train in a safe environment.

"Jonathan Pie" is actually a character created by British actor and comedian Tom Walker. He is a caricature of a ranting leftist news commentator, although some of "Pie's" criticisms of the left reflect Walker's own opinions. No actual leftist/liberal/progressive is as honest and self-critical as "Pie" is.

"Jonathan Pie" is a fictitious British news reporter, created and played in the tradition of political satire by British actor and comedian Tom Walker. Pie does not so much report the news as rant about the state of politics in the UK. Pie received international coverage after the 2016 US elections, when his report on Donald Trump's victory went viral, becoming a YouTube trending video. However, some media outlets, including PJ Media, did not recognize Jonathan Pie as a fictitious character, presenting him instead as a real-life, professional, "British lefty reporter".

Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.
