      Although I'm an American(naturalized U.S. citizen), I was born in the Phillippines(moved to U.S. when I was a wee infant), and I'm Pro-gun.

Isn't the Phillippines one of the more gun friendly countries in SE Asia? I remembered when I was there 20 years ago, it seems that almost everyone's dad has a shotgun/pistol.

This post brought back a fond memory...
...a few years back I was visiting family back in the PI. Well, an older cousin of mine is a customs agent, and he had a buddy that was in the militia? or reserve? My cousin hears I'm really into guns, so he arranges a surprise for me. He has me meet his buddy and guess what was waiting for me? A gin-u-wine M-16 with an M203 grenade launcher! Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man...I'm drooling over here at this point. We go out and shoot it, nothing big, just one mag, but no matter how much I pleaded, I wasn't able to open up with the '203 . It was fun none the less.

PI is very gun friendly both legally and illegally.

Former President Marcos did try to wipe out guns from civilians like Hitler did. But everyone still had guns. The most popular guns there are 1911 .45's and AR15 type assault rifles full auto.

I have known some Filipinos since high school and every one of their fathers owned guns. One of them had told me that many Filipinos own guns to ensure that what happened to them during WWII never happen again. Thats a pretty damn good reason if you ask me, and I think the JPFO would probably agree.

Vietnamese are frequently pro gun as well.

Many of my Filipino customer are actually smuggling guns to the Philippines.

I'm glad to hear that they are working on making it easyer to own firearms.

I recently shot a 3 gun match with a squad that was mostly Phillipino (GREAT guys) and one of them mentioned that back in the Phillipines when they shoot a match they always save about 80 rounds or so to defend themselves on the way home if needed. Man, and I thought sitting in traffic on the way home was bad.

Plenty o' guns in the PI.
I was there about 8 months ago and had the chance to buy a beat Up (functional) M16 for about $200. Guy was hard up for cash... I passed on it as I rarely visit the PI and would not know where to fire it there, LOL.
They have gun shops in malls! Can you imagine walking into a mall to find not one, but sometimes 3 guns shops!

Action shooting has definately increased in popularity there after Jethro Dionisio moved back. It's my understanding that he's into trap/skeet now, but he's got a couple of shops and even a school over there.

My dad witnessed first-hand as a kid what happens to an un-armed populace during the Japanese occupation. I never caught flak from him once I was old enough to start building my "collection". My mom was a different story, but hey, that's what moms do.

I've yet to meet an anti-gun Filipino, and I've met more than a few in my lifetime.
