and he sounds like the ultimate hoplophobe...
Why does one need a uterus to be a hoplophobe? What am I missing?
A dry sense of humor? But based on what I've seen posted elsewhere, you certainly are intelligent. I grant you that, sir.

Perhaps you overlooked the complete title: ultimate hoplophobe. One I usually associate with whiney liberal women; the aspersion being that women seem to be the more vocal of the sexes especially when crying for gun control.

      ....
Interesting, I have had a different experience . I have flown with rifles and handguns with AA, DL, Southwest and JetBlue.

The only time I had to do anything special was couple of times I had to pick up my TuffPak from an oversize luggage area. I did not need an ID, just luggage tag. Handguns which were in my checked luggage was picked up from the carousel.

All commercial civilian airports in the US are locally owned except one (Reagan National). Due to Federal law, airlines cannot ban you from transporting firearms if you adhere to the protocol. Cities(owners of the airport) also cannot ban airlines from transporting firearms due to the aforementioned Federal supremacy. But they can ban firearms on airport property even in checked (or to be checked) luggage. So you live in a free state, lawfully checking your locked case firearm, fly to SFO, go to pick it up at special handling and SF airport police are waiting for you there with handcuffs.
I'm not giving the Progs ideas, Kevin DeLeon, LA and San Fran Prog politicos are already busily drafting emergency legislation this week end.
Right. That's what I was saying...

You can't go check a gun in at LaGuardia or JFK, for example. You'll be greeted by Port Authority and arrested. Even though it's legal to check a firearm, you can't possess one in the regions where those airports are located. So... if you're connecting through there, ok. But if you're checking in, you had those guns with you before you got the airport. And that's a problem, apparently. That's why, if you're flying with a firearm, make sure you don't connect or stop at JFK or LGA. Because if, for some reason, you need to spend the night or something or retrieve your bags and then re-check them, you're in for a visit to jail.

The above applies to handguns only as those States require a possession permit. However, I have spent a couple of days in NYC visiting my daughter with rifles on my way to South Africa. NYC allows 48 hours for an unlicensed rifle for transit. Fly from Long Beach via Jetblue, spend couple of days with her take South African airlines and repeat a couple of days visit on the way back as well.

PS. Gotta make sure the rifles are legal though. My bolt guns are.

Yeah, I think you're right about it being for handguns mostly. Probably for semi-auto rifles too, if they have evil features. I would not want to risk it. Even with a bolt-action or a shotgun.

Yes. FOPA is a thing. But NYC and New Jersey Port Authority don't give a **** about FOPA. Tell it to the judge: http://www.martinkanelaw.com/crimina...at-lga-or-jfk/

In NYC, a firearm is loaded when the ammunition is "in close proximity" to the firearm. That means, if your ammo is checked in the same bag... it's loaded gun. It's BS, but I've read accounts of Port Authority going to town on people for this. Three years ago, I read an article about someone who checked their firearm in whatever town they flew out of, on their way to Maine. Plane had to do an emergency landing at JFK. Guy had to retrieve his bags, stay overnight at JFK, then fly out the next day and recheck his bags. When he went to recheck his bags, he was arrested for possession of a gun. Don't remember what kind of gun it was.
