I have personally seen them go into peoples stuff looking for "something", lucky for them they didn't get shot. This was without asking for permission from the owner of the bag.

As to the checking ammo thing, that's fine as long as they know what they're looking at. One of the funniest thing I remember was one of the RO's reached into a friends ammo can (without asking) and pulled out a .50 AMAX round. He places the magnet to it and places the round on the bench, starts to reach in for another and my friend says "they're all the same"! RO say "yeah but I have to check them" to which my friend replys "make sure you put them back in the same order you pulled them out"! RO tucked tail and walked back to the office.

I've only shot at the public rifle range, not the "Eagle's Nest" or anywhere else at Angeles. But I don't get all of the praise for the "really nice range!"???

I know we're in the desert, but haven't you guys at least seen photos of ranges in other parts of the country? You know that 100yd stretch of dust/old casings/mud between the benches and the targets? There are countless places were that stretch is covered with grass as nice as the greens at your favorite country club. And the combination of bomb shelter concrete benches and 1950's era folding metal chairs is just plain lame. I'm only an inch or two over 6ft and I have to build up the bench with whatever is handy to get a decent surface at a reasonable height.

Yeah, I know there are ranges that consist of nothing more than a parking lot next to a square mile of dirt, and Angeles at least has bathrooms, an office/store and a soda machine. But before anyone confuses that with "really nice" - you need to get out more. There is just SOOO much more that they could offer, and this is one place where there are plenty of folks who would be willing to pay for some nicer facilities, and more shooting opportunities. (moving targets, etc.)

That said, I'll be there tomorrow, like most every Friday for the past 18 months....

Been going there for a few years. I obey their rules (it is their range), and I don't have any problems. They've always asked me for a round to check, but the last time I was there as I was slung up prone, I heard some rummaging noises and looked back to see one of the older ROs digging thru my bag. I was using the M2 Korean ball ammo, and I guess that he had a hard time getting one round out of the box, so he turned it over and dumped a few out. I thought it was weird, but figured next time I would leave some loose ammo out - the ammo that was outside my gear bag that day was loaded in clips.

Also, if I see someone there with an AR with a detachable mag, I assume it's legal and keep my mouth shut.

Wow...I've not witnessed the "rummaging thru your bag" when your back was turned. I probably would've soon been talking to the owner about the employee's behavior. Infringing on your private property rights without your consent/knowledge is wrong.

But then I typically lock my bags (had to find SOME use for those tiny luggage locks) and ammo cans, so "rummaging" without consent is nearly impossible.

If they do, what should I do? Whip out my leatherman and pull a bullet for them to test seperate from the case?

I shoot there almost once a month, usually on weekends. I have never had a RO go through my bag. I do get politely asked if they can check my ammo with a magnet most of the time. I can't say I have ever been harassed there, except maybe the occasional RO that thinks we're buddies and wants to talk about _____ with me while I am cleaning or loading mags.

People at public ranges to some stupid things, I prefer having RO's watch them to keep them from breaking safety rules. I keep an look out for myself, but I don't have eyes in the back of my head.

Most of the 7.62x39mm fired at Angeles is steel cased, and so is a lot of the 7.62x54R. One of the ROs on the rifle side is a Mosin/SKS nut. So, yeah, they've seen a lot of steel cased ammunition.

I work as a line officer at Angeles. I am one of the 20 somethings on a power trip. I am glad to see that some of are work is appreciated after all we are just trying to ensure that everyone stays safe. In regards to telling people to unpin there mags i only recommend this so that i can safely attempt to clear a case stuck in the barrel or any other jam, other then that i advise people to stay within the law.

Sure gangbangers come up but for the most part we have a good eliment that stays safe and obey the rules. I recommend shooting on thursdays or fridays if your looking for a nice day to shoot.

Hey Whlgun. Wonder if you were the one I talked with on Saturday about my M16A1 with the MonsterMan grip. Was with a large group of shooters, firing many types of milsurps on the right side of the pistol/shotgun/rifle range.

Thanks again for letting me shoulder that rifle, i really liked the way that monsterman grip felt.
